Your New Knife!

Where 49% of the designs are a Seax, 49% are a "Competition Chopper," and the other 2% are "other?"

Actually, I like the show a lot. It's great background noise.

Given the abuse the knives are subjected to in "testing" it would not make sense to make anything else if the goal is winning.

did you get the standard sheath or deep carry? the standard is about as small as a sheath can get and still be workable. the handle does stick up a bit but easily covered by a shirt.
and you're right, dauntless makes excellent knives.
Standard. Probably would be OK without the clip.

Get the clip….they’re removable if you don’t like it. I went with the mod4 1.75 shorty on a standard sheath. Quick note-that sheath will fit the de dogbone but it does have some extra drag that doesn’t exist on a regular dogbone blade. I can send pics (OF THE KNIFE) if you’d like.

My issue with the sheath I got (the camo one that came with the Pineland) was that the clip was for pockets only; it couldn't work with a belt, which I didn't understand when I ordered. And that pocket clip? That sucker CLINGS ON LIKE A FOUR-TOED SLOTH to my pocket. It's hard to dismount that sheath without tearing my actual jeans.

I like belt carry, so I went with the standard sheath and a belt clip after trying a couple more things. That sheath's only problem is that the opening is SKINNY, making it hard to re-sheath quickly. That's a training issue, but with the DE model it's a potentially painful one!

Those guys that compete almost all use custom knives. Many of them them make them themselves. Have you checked out that show Forged in Fire?
Two of the knives I own were forged by Forged in Fire contestants.

There were also 22 episodes made of a spin-off called Knife or Death, in which contestants wielded their knives against an “obstacle course” of targets.

Extra drag from the top edge or maybe that ridge where the top edge stops? The standard Dogbone I have slides in and securely snaps into the sheath. None of the Hiker sheaths drag. Noted to get the clip and just take off if I want- thanks.

The drag is in the middle. The standard sheath is molded for the single edged blade. The circled part is where the drag occurs.
ETA: the pineland came with a deep carry sheath and there is no specific blade geometry in that sheath. Both knives fit and draw the same.

That's a great looking blade. Kicking myself for not grabbing the Pineland DE. Looks like the Deep Carry is the only sheath option for the standard DE.

The Pineland came with Deep Carry by default, but I'm not sure that's necessarily the case for the non-Pineland?

I wonder if they’d be willing to make a substitution on the sheath if you contacted them?
Maybe, but I think they struggle a little with special requests and their fulfillment is sometimes a little wonky. One of my knives sat in 'shipped but not picked up by the carrier' mode for nearly 2 weeks. Also my first order bounced back because of a stock mis-count. Possibly they have a partner / contract provider for assembly and shipping. I would have no issue with that, as it's a small shop somewhere between custom and production. They focus on the important piece- making a great knife. Zach is super responsive and takes care of any issues quickly, which is refreshing.

Seems that a few of these American semi-production knife shops make and 'drop' batches of a given model for sale. I hope they make a good living at it because in most cases the product is excellent. Batch production (and selling) is not only more efficient for their time in the shop, it probably helps with their cash flow.

Reminds me I have a few Busse Son Of Badgers that I want to sell.
Busse makes great steel. I went heavily down the rabbit hole a dozen years ago, but have sold off most. I love their big choppers for splitting wood. Still have a scrapyard chopper, ASH, ratmandu and a couple others. Under hard use they’ve never let me down. Highly recommended.

Yeah…..I love the dogbones I ordered. I am having a really hard time not pulling the trigger on one of the pineland hikers they have left. I’m sure you know this but you can order just a sheath from them. Good luck with whatever option you go with.

Got my hunting knife, actually two hunting knives. The smaller one is for birds, rabbits, and finer hide work on things like yotes. The larger one is for deer, elk, bear, etc. The smaller one will also be used as a paring knife in the kitchen.

G10 handles and magnacut steel. Christ these things are sharp. Hopefully they hold up well to tendon work. The shape and length of the larger one is just what I was looking for. Large enough to cleanly cut elk backstraps out, but small enough that I can gut an animal if I need to and not worry about piercing that stomach. Deep belly for hide work. But not too deep where it makes everything else cumbersome.

Heads up to the Dauntless fans that they dropped their latest Musashi batch. The Sanmai alloy blades went quickly but everything else is in stock.

They are working to have their Clifft (Bowie type) ready by end of month.

Personally I'm waiting for their next Dogbone DE (double edge) drop. If anyone sees those before me please let me know. [thumbsup]

The Clifft looks pretty awesome. Love the way they blended the guard with the handle. I’m already in too deep on big fixed blades but this one may push me a little deeper.

Ain't no such thang!

I expected to love the Dogbone, and it didn't disappoint. I'm not into the aesthetic of all their products, but the Musashi definitely rustles my jimmies. And that Clifft ain't bad either.

I'd been craving one of those. Just jumped. Magnacut. Black oxide.

Thanks for the tip!
I'm liking the couple of Magnacut blades I have. Besides the edge holding ability the stainless property is coming in handy. Whatever I carry is likely to be exposed to weather and/or perspiration as I usually am doing something active outside. Today was no exception and my EDC was wet for maybe 7 hours. LOL my sh!tposting chair is still damp from when I went inside for a coffee and some NES.
