2-7 Cav in the Ia Drang Valley

The book is arguably the best first-person combat memoir ever written. First, Moore (who is credited with inventing the After Action Report) took notes throughout. Second, he had an experienced combat reporter with him. Finally, they traveled to Vietnam and met with the Brigade Commander they faced, who reviewed both his battle log and maps with them to hear the other side of the battle.

His soldiers worship him.

I was in 2-7 4th brigade Long Knife when i was in. Went with 2-7 to Mosul Iraq. Did alot of reading about the history of the unit while i was there and in a odd turnout on mid tour leave i went to vegas and i ran into a bunch of Vietnam vets having a Reunion. I saw a older gentlemen wearing a stetson with 1-7 cav insignia and got to talking to him. Turned out he was the PL for mortars on his tour and i was attached to mortars for the tour (11b attached to 11c's, had never seen a mortar until i got in country). What a great guy he was and what a great book to read. Its when men were men i tell ya. Garry Owen!

Hal Moore was a bad ass of epic proportions. Best movie ever.

Outstanding movie about men going above and beyond.

And of course, they never should have been there in the first place, but that wasn't their fault.

One of Sam Elliot's best roles. He's never had a bad one, but he was the CSM in this movie.

CSM Plumley is a legend. He had four combat jumps in WWII and a combat jump with the 187th before being assigned to 7th Cav. He was 45 years old at the time of the battle. He retired in 1974 with 33 years in and passed away in 2012 at age 92. He is buried at Fort Benning, presumably in the "leaning rest."

The book and more specifically the movie are the only portrayals of Vietnam that are not complete horseshit. There are a couple Vietnam related books on the market that are realistic and true but for movies, "We Were Soldiers...." is pretty much it.

The video didn't even mention Sam Elliott sitting right there with the family... as Sam would probably prefer. He became quite a fan of CSM Plumley, getting to know him for the role.
