C-pher points out some very valid points about the retail business.
When I look at Dick's Lodge wrt guns, I see the focus is mostly on hunting guns. Since I know nothing about hunting, fishing and almost as little about archery, it's not a place where my personal expertise could be very useful.
Although I've shot with some people who were also very "into" fishing and hunting, when I think back over all those years I realize it was maybe a handful of people who had expertise in all three areas.
The nature of retail is keep overhead costs down, so when you go into the Lodge, you are lucky to find one or two people working there at one time. You're drawing straws as to getting the employee who knows something about your sport vs. another one.
That is why we oftentimes say . . . support your local gun shop! If you need something quick at a Dick's or a Wal-Mart, go in and grab it, but do NOT expect "service" at those stores!
I'm hoping that Bass Pro has a "real" gun department where the clerks sell all sorts of guns (handguns, C&Rs - I can hope, as well as long guns and accessories) and it's not part of the fishing, boating, etc. department. If so, I may just look to work there part-time for fun and $.
