AK build parties, anyone?

sorry to ask,but what exactly is a populated barell?

It's a barrel that has been pressed into the trunnion, had the headspace checked, pinned, and then had the rear sight block, handguard retainer, gas block, and front sight block installed, drilled, and pinned.

Everybody needs to start getting their kits, barrels, 922r compliant parts, and receivers in order. We don't yet have a definite hosting location, but we have plenty of time to get that taken care of. I'd say to just go ahead and plan on it being late April to early May for a date. That gives everybody about 3 months to be ready. As time goes, I'm sure we'll gather more interested people, and I'm quite sure we will figure out where to do all this. If need be, I'll empty out my carport and we can make do out there. No worries.

Always replies is an understatement... Here's what Ink had to say...

"I can offer this (and feel free to pick my brain all you want)
give people 3-5 months notice to get kits and receivers
have extra rivet kits (they never come with all you need, and people will mess some up)
offer a date ahead of time to help people de-mil their kits (you are in for a loooong day if you de mil and build all at once)
never-seize works better than anything for re-installing barrels
NODAK receivers are very tough to drill and ream.... multiple solid carbide or cobalt bits are the order of the day
start small when drilling rivets and go from both ends when doing the long rivets on rear trunions
your jigs will take a little bit of a beating...
some long rivets benefit from a few thousandths taken off w a grinder to form a nice head
bolt cutter rivet tools... yeah everyone says they are great.... untill the jaws break on the first rivet
a lot of the proper tools from AK builder are not very expensive and make for easy work
have files and reamers
have small c clamps and vise grips, many hammers and punches
I built a couple of hefty wooden benches outa 4x4's and 2x12's for the builds i did
polish underfolder mechanisms are like putting together clockwork blindfolded
set up the day before and do a dry run
get ready for weird questions....

are you doing a strictly ak47 build or will there be amd65's, ak74's, etc etc etc....?
all tooling will need slight modifications, have a couple good grinders (bench, die, 4" stone)
BACON!
um..... oh, good extra portable lighting!!!
keep each jig in its own little case so things dont get mixed up. my first build, everyone watched me press out my barrel pin, then they did theirs, then press out the barrel, then them.... but i was learning as i went. the last one i did people could do multiple operations at once. Max (762x39 here on NES, SKS ray were a HUGE source of help for me)
Keep in mind location and liability when it comes to alcohol.
headspace gauges are a nice option.....
um... also, no live ammo!!
also.... when using a 20 ton press, you can press pins and tools through shit that it aint supposed to go through EASILY. AK's should come appart and go together with little to no effort. if it don't then somethings wrong.

If i think of anything else, ill drop you a line! HAVE FUN!!!! Its a lot of work, but a lot of fun."

This is great. I should note I have extra lighting and go/no-go headspace gauges.

Busy this weekend? I think the only thing I'm missing is a barrel pin, unless it came with my parts kit and I didn't notice it.

Maybe I never know lol . Did u check the trunnion? Barrel head spaced ?

Depends what you want .
"Collectable " kit or cheapest ?

Ak-builder kits with barrels are the safest bet.

Receivers 80 or 100.

If it helps anybody with what they should be looking to get, here is my list... It may not be exactly what you are all looking for, but it contains all that is needed, and might get you going in the right direction.

Parts Kit:
Polish Fixed Stock AK-47 Hand-Picked Parts Kit $330
http://armsofamerica.com/polishakm-47partskit-1.aspx

Receiver:
Premium AKM Receiver - NDS-1 EZ $90
http://www.nodakspud.com/page2.htm

Barrel:
US 16" 7.62x39 Nitride Barrel $109
http://armsofamerica.com/newus762x39blacknitridedbarrel.aspx

922r Compliant Parts:
(Need 6 total - Barrel and Receiver count as 2)

Tapco Slant Brake $11 (counts as 1 compliant part)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tapco-0684-...622?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4878b0fa36

Tapco G2 Double Hook Fire Control Group $30 (counts as 3 compliant parts)
http://armsofamerica.com/tapcog2doublehookfirecontrolgroup-2899.aspx

Rivet Set:
(Buying two sets. Because one is none, and two is one)

AK-Builder AKM Fixed Stock Rivet Set $9
http://armsofamerica.com/ak-builderakmfixedstockrivetset900.aspx

Total price (before shipping):
$588

It can obviously cost me less if I wanted...
I could grab a lesser quality kit (-$30).
I could purchase from a different seller and get the barrel with a kit, instead of separately (-$10)
I could get a lesser receiver from Ohio Ordnance Works instead (-$28)
I could take my chances and get only one rivet set (-$9)
Total price (before shipping) if I went this route instead = $511

Hopefully this helps others understand the various things that need to be ordered, and a general price that should be expected currently.

This listing on Royal Tiger says that they are shipping to MA again, but it only says so on this kit with the fugly furniture. They claim it is all US made.

You could shave a few bucks off of crono's excellent list above. No barrel, no 922r parts (unless the trigger sucks), and one rivet set is included. All you really need is a receiver.

This listing doesn't say it will ship to MA, but it also doesn't exclude MA either...

I'd call and find out about it. I'd think if they exclude the 30 round mag, you may actually be able to have it shipped here. If not, PM me - I have a friend in NH that has never had a problem with me drop shipping things to his place.

As for you, I'd go this route for starters...

http://www.royaltigerimports.com/product-p/ak740203.htm

This link includes everything you need except the Receiver and a compliant trigger kit (both of which would bring you to the necessary 6 US made parts to be 922r compliant)
And unlike the last link I posted - this one DOES say that it ships to MA.

Just for fun, the last time I needed a trigger group I ordered it from Walmart with the free ship-to-store option. I think I had a gift card to use up or something.

Normally I like to support AK-Builder, Carolina Shooters, Mississippi Auto Arms, etc..., but I thought it was cool to buy an AK fcg at Wally World.

Hahaha... Would have never thought to look there! Can also grab my muzzle brake there too...

The hungarians are nice too, but the polish kit comes demilled, which is worth the extra money, IMHO. I'm still working on demilling my hungarian kit -- and who knows if I'll screw something up. ;)

I don't know if this is a trick or not . On short rivets I center drill till the head falls off the just a few hits with a hammer and thin punch the pop right out.
Only thing that was a pain was saving the enforcement plate for the grip.

The flat spot sells these cheap . And a you weld it your self rear trunnion for folders for 15$.

Thanks! I'll give that a shot. I've already got most of the barrel out of the front pieces, but havent attacked the trunnion rivets yet.
