Exploding pagers

Keep in mind that a lot of previously unidentified terrorists are now known and likely injured as well. A lot of the network is now exposed and that alone is worth the effort.

The Israelis did.

The assumed goal is to sow paranoia and fear into Hezbolla.

I suspect it'll just create more blowback against Israel.

Afghanistan should be a clear lesson that you cant beat the idealogy out of them. They dont mind dying for the cause. Hell, thats the point for a lot of them.

The only thing that worked in Afghanistan was money. Turns out you can rent terror groups.

From the one video I saw, it looks like they didn't just explode when they started beeping, it looked like they went off when someone pressed the button to see what the message was. Which makes more sense given the reports that they don't have enough hand or eye surgeons to meet the demand. Just like when you get a text message, you press a button on your phone so you can see it.

Would be terrorists who are blind and missing fingers are not all that effective. While jokes about damaged packages are funny, I think the Israelis put a lot more thought into the ergonomics of when it would be optimal to detonate these devices.

It was more of a psy ops thing
Hezbollah terrorists that were flying under the radar got exposed.
None of the bad guys will feel safe around their tech, or anything else.
Recruits might not mind the idea of getting 72 virgins, but going through life without your junk or a butt cheek is pretty unappealing to a young man.
Friends won't want to hang around them for fear they might explode.

You're correct about the impossibility of changing the idealogy. But Israel isn't the US. The US involved itself in Iraq and Afghanistan for political reasons, (as best I can determine - and I'm absolutely NOT a foreign policy expert). Israel however is trying to survive. They're not interested in converting believers of Islam, they're interested in surviving them.

Unlike the US and coalition, Israel isn't interested in winning hearts and minds. They are interested in killing the terrorists and destroying their ability to wage war. These people are now ineffective as terrorists, at least for a while, because of their injuries.

I have to believe that the Israelis didn't know who would get individual pagers. It's more like leaving landmines behind knowing that someone is likely to step on one. In this case the Israelis will get a treasure trove of intel on who is who and who is related to who. A lot more people will be on their radar now than before this.

I also expect that they have a follow up plan in place.

Now I have to go back and watch "Mossad 101" again. This time not as fiction, but as a documentary. ;)

Israel is completely capable of solving the problem. The issue is the world wouldn't be able to tolerate the solutions.

You can wear a suicide vest while your injured. Not like you need to be able bodied to do the majority of nonsense these clowns do.

But, you can't do the kind of thing the Hama**h***s did on October 7. Which is the phase that both organizations want to be in. Active combat, not blowing up random shit. Hezbollah has gone head to head with Israel in the past and lost every time. This likely made some of the, let's call them company level, leadership ineffective.

Fighting them has never worked. The only solutions are to expel them (which the west would not tolerate) or pay them off (which israel is not going to do).

what I don't quite get is why didn't they make the pagers EXTRA killy?
Seems like they missed a perfect opportunity to just wipe 'em out.

Add some ball bearings dipped in anti-coagulant so the Hezi's DIE, not just
injured?

Maybe they can just shoot any young men limping or on crutches ;)
Phones in front pockets going KB is going to take a lot of bad guys out of the gene pool, dead or alive.

Israel has beat them every time they've fought them. Jordan and Egypt gave up and made piece.

Im not talking about traditional ground invasion by large local military force. Most of israelis problems are targeted attacks.

The invasion last year being one of the few recent exceptions and by the looks of it that was a botched intelligence situation with a insanely slow response time.

"BEIRUT, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Hand-held radios used by Hezbollah detonated on Wednesday across Lebanon's south and in Beirut's southern suburbs, a security source and a witness said, further stoking tensions with Israel a day after similar explosions launched via the group's pagers.
Three people were killed in Lebanon's Bekaa region, the state news agency reported, and dozens of people were wounded in the latest device blast.
At least one of the blasts took place near a funeral organized by Iran-backed Hezbollah for those killed the previous day when thousands of pagers used by the group exploded across the country and wounded many of the group's fighters."

i think it's kind of shocking that those dudes didn't immediately ditch all the comms gear they bought recently after the pager thing yesterday, but i do wonder how many radios or pagers were handed off to non-fighters so they can have a rallying cry about innocents being targeted...

The BBC is now reporting that some sort of handheld radio devices are also exploding. The report doesn't carry much detail, just talking heads blabbing about motives, escalation, response, yada, yada, yada.

Same thought.

I'd be looking at anything with a rechargeable battery like "nope, gtfo of here".

I guess the destruction of the radios is a good thing anyway regardless of it hurt any terrorists, disrupting communication is a major win- maybe they weighed the odds and found the pagers a better place to hit first, it did after all out the ambassador.

"Unlike with this week's pagers, the AOL discs did not have the means to explode on their own. Instead, they were loaded with special malware that infected the terrorist computer and caused it to overload the disc drive, spinning the disc three times as fast. The extra friction on the disc, which was purportedly covered in a thin, clear coat of C4, caused the disc to rupture and the entire computer to explode. In many cases, it is believed the last thing the terrorist using the disc saw was AOL attempting to connect through their phone line, the strange modem clanging noises disguising the sound of the high-speed disc drive."

I am thinking the device operated in multiple modes. Because I've seen other pictures where a device was just left somewhere (like a table) and it blew a hole in the
table. So there's probably a piece of code that has a delay in it, but eliminates the delay and instantly blows the payload if someone opens the message.

I wonder what the message said. It would be funny as hell if it was like ALLAHU ACKBAR. [rofl]

I'm starting to think that this is battle space prep for a much larger operation. If Hezbollah Command and Control is severely degraded, it works in Israel's favor.
