Guide to gun rights in your Massachusetts town

They do honor certs from other instructors however I don't know if taking the local PD class makes a difference (prob does who knows). Oh and btw my my dad took the same class with me. His renewal only took about 2.5 weeks or so. We both attended the same class (required even if renewing). We were planning on taking the class elsewhere but Holden offered theirs to residence for $30 which saved us some money.
Does this mean they require a new class be taken for a renewal? If so, I don't think that's very green.

have not updated the map lately but i am not seeing any changes. possibly Hudson as green, but it is still red in the OP list.

Class A ALP in Lawrence? Really? [shocked]

It generally takes more than one before the map gets changed. Sometimes people get unrestricted As from otherwise red towns for a variety of reasons.

Question for those of you who can help, and possibly live in a black town in MA.

Under their rules you need to have your LTC-B for a year, once you have proven you are worthy you re-apply a year later for your LTC-A (plus another $100, application, bkg check, etc, etc). Did my duty for the LTC-B, I inquired while I was in my LTC-A interview about having restrictions taken off and could tell immediately it was not going to happen. Got greeted with all sort of questions why I wanted no restrictions, what I was intending to carry for, etc, etc. Long story short I have had my LTC-A for a year and a half now with restrictions (target+hunting). I want them off, but I know both chiefs are going to be real tough on this. What are my best options here? I also do not want to spend ANOTHER $100 just to have restrictions taken off. I have lived in this town all of my life (23 yrs) and have been a good upstanding citizen.

I've got a pretty good idea where you live. If they agree to remove your restrictions, there is no additional cost or application providing they're doing it to the SAME license.

My father was sent a letter with his renewal notice stating that he had to take the basic firearms course regardless of having it for the past 15 years or so as unrestricted. The application process was almost exactly the same as mine except they did not require him to provide references. I had to provide two recommendation letters along with my application (the word firearm had to be mentioned in both letters) as a first timer. So with that said you may be right in thinking its not very green...its more like lime green.

So after 2 years of having a LTC-A Sport & Target, No Conceal Carry - in Boston - what are my chances of getting the restrictions removed? :)

Zero. Unless your plans involve fitting into one of the "boxes" that BPD has set out.

Although it's a lot of work. Could someone rent a place month to month, change their address on their driver's license, reapply for a LTC A Unrestricted in their new town, get their LTC then change their legal residence back to their primary address? I mean, it's ALOT of work, but it'd get you an unrestricted in Boston for what, 6 years? When you update your address on your LTC, is that means for automatic re-evaluation by the local PD?

Yes, you could wallhack the system that way, but it'd be a good idea to not get caught doing it. It's also pretty expensive way to do it.

If you're willing to go to those lengths, why not just move out of Boston entirely?

Thought I'd post up on behalf of my friend, who just went through the process in Brewster. Started sometime in March or April, got the interview in late may, and was told to wait 6-8 weeks or more, putting final delivery likely sometime in early-mid August. Will update when it turns up.

He was directed towards a 'Sport and Target' LTC A, though the PD claimed it was just because he was a first-time applicant who didn't already have an FID, so its entirely possible they'd issue an ALP in a year or so.

I know this is very ambiguous feedback, I though I'd just throw it out there. I'll poll a few more folks I know in the area to see what their experiences have been.

there are plenty of people who don't get what they ask for...

I agree, but they aren't going to give you ALP if you ask for a restriction... My point is that you might as well ask for ALP and expect a restriction. Why would you ask for a restriction? If you ask for a sport you're only going to get a sport, but if you ask for ALP you might get sport, but you might also get no restrictions if the COP is having a good day.

Mike, I'd like to hear where you received all this information that you are stating. Is this all fact, or is it what you are typing off the top of your head?

You can't get what you don't ask for...

I guess that was more of a life observation... If my statement is wrong in terms of firearms licensing feel free to correct me and I'll delete my post. But if you want ALP why wouldn't you just apply for ALP? A suggestion of the licensing officer is just a suggestion, what do you really have to lose? Are they going to completely reject your application because you put 'ALP' instead of 'Sports and Hunting'?

Example: If your boss asks you what you want for a raise and you say 2% then the most you're going to get 2%... but if you ask for 5% you might get 5% or you might get something less. Point being, why not aim high?

Shirley, MA - most assuredly GREEN.

It takes a lot of patience as they are understaffed, but the police chief, who runs licensing, is at least VERY courteous and respectful throughout the process. a little over 2.5 months - mine was set to expire at the end of may, I submitted my paperwork for renewal mid March (heard too many horror stories about delays and last minute filings) heard back for the interview at the end of March, it came in first week of June.

All in all, I am happy with how I was treated - when I did the same thing in Lowell, I was treated like a piece of shiiiiiite for merely asking for an unrestricted Class A. I can't stress enough that I was treated very well during this process and that I have a tremendous amount of respect for the attitude and courtesy that was extended by the chief.

My gripe is as others, I wish it could have been done faster and hope that in the future, laws change in such a way that facilitates a faster process.

This is horse.... Anyone have tips for someone in Canton? I had my LTC-B for a year, upgraded to LTC-A Hunting/Target restrictions. Been a resident of this town for 23 years.

Why would you ask for a restriction? If you ask for a sport you're only going to get a sport, but if you ask for ALP you might get sport, but you might also get no restrictions if the COP is having a good day.

Boston won't even process your application if you want ALP without meeting their criteria.
