This is like the OJ kidnapping case - the sentence was not for what he was convicted of (that would generally not rate 23 years), but for the things he was obviously guilty of but not convicted. Courts are specifically allowed to use evidence and allegations of non-convicted wrongdoing when setting sentences. It may have been justice in this case, but the process is fraught with peril.
