HD.4420 State House and Boston Common Rally

Turnout was disappointing, like less than .08 percent of us, though at least the crowd there was enthusiastic. The statehouse was pretty much a waste for me, the house was in session so no reps and my senator was hiding or whatever.
“ the lights are on but no one’s home”…

Suspiciously only one entrance was open due to ‘detectors being down’ or something, at least made for an impressively long line to get in.
Was an active bunch out front with signs and such.
 
Not that 3000 people made a difference with 7/20/16

But this turn out shouldn’t be considered good enough. It’s disappointing.

Not to knock the people that did show up and coordinated the bussing, they should be very proud of their actions. Everyone else should be embarrassed for not making the time if they’re then going to complain when it’s rammed through to Maura’s desk.

I don’t live down there anymore so I have no one to care about my opinion in the State House. But this shit makes my blood boil knowing not enough people give a f*** to even show up.

If 20,000 people showed up it wouldn’t make a difference. As I said earlier, if there is a fight to be won, it’s in a federal courtroom. I will financially support that battle. I will not waste my time arguing with democrats.

Yeah it was disappointing for sure.
I took the day off from work and left my wife and baby at home to attend. It was the least I could do.

Let's be honest: many, many, many people on this forum consider Massachusetts a "lost cause" and do nothing but bitch. It's an excuse.

The Free State project in NH considered 25,000 voters out of a population of 1,300,000 would be enough to generate legislative successes. That's 1.9%.

There are an estimated 600,000 license holders in MA out 6.6 million. That's 9% - but we can't change anything, so move? WTF?

Not everyone is in a position to take a random Wednesday off with a months notice. If you want numbers it has to be the weekend even if they aren't in session.
Imagine they said that in 1776.
They have been planning for this for a month. If you can’t make provisions or take a half day, that is sad state of affairs

Even if 100,000 showed up on a weekend day, you'd get almost no media coverage and no opportunity to do a FTF with a legistraitor or aide.

Better to have 2-400 show up on a weekday even if you can't meet with a legistraitor.

I was at the state house rally in 1999 when we had 5,000 show up (weekday) and it still didn't matter to the legistraitors.

Calling in sick can be "dangerous" to one's career. Back before all the media coverage, I attended the public hearings by just taking the time off (unofficially). Once the media was in those hearings and broadcasting it on the news, I couldn't afford to be spotted on-camera unless I took a vacation day. So at that point I officially took vacation days to show up for those hearings. I attended them for >20 years and spoke at almost every one of them.

I'm moving anyway, it's not a matter of if, but when. Still, I wanted to do my part in the state I've lived for 60 years, this state didn't always suck like it does now.

I’ve withheld my opinion til now because I didn’t want to be a Debbie Downer or discourage anyone, but I’ve been radicalized to the point of no longer believing in the system, whether it’s peacefully protesting at a rally or engaging my Representatives.

You could probably talk me into attending a New Hampshire rally if gun control ever reared its ugly head there, but Massachusetts is too far gone. As you pointed out, a wildly successful rally after 7/20/2016 had no effect, in fact it may have contributed to Maura’s rise to power.

So while I’m legitimately proud of the people that attended, I’m not even remotely embarrassed, no.
