More and more I've been going down the rabbit hole of Bayonets. Doing some reading and research there just as much or more to know about Bayos then there is to know about the firearms they go with. I've slowly been picking up Bayos for some of my surplus rifles. So far I've got period correct Bayos for my Arisaka 99, Enfield No 4 Mk1 and SMLE, M1 Garand and Carbine and will be picking up a nice example for my K98 this weekend from a fellow NESer.

Just looking at the options for the Arisaka, there are 4 different options you could go with depending on year and how far up the ranks you were in the Japanese military. The same for the K98. There are a TON of different Bayos out there from the mass produced to the works of art done by some German manufacturers. Significant price change as well if you have a matching number scabbard with the Bayo. You look at the Bayo for the Enfield and some of them are as big as a saber. It's like carrying a sword on the end of your rifle. Fun stuff.

Anyone else down this rabbit hole. What have you found so far?

I get the "collecting aspect" of them but I never plan to use a bayonet on any rifle but did purchase one for the AR-15 because I couldn't pass up the deal.

Other than that, I prefer to spend the money on powder, primers or spare parts.

I spent some good money on nice bayonets for a few of my military rifles over the years. In the end I don’t enjoy the combo as much as I thought I would. So the bayonets currently just sit in a separate cabinet and collect dust.

I always had the bayonet for each of my military rifles. Some rifles, I had the different types that fit, such as the M1 Garand rifle - The long M1905, the shortened M1905E1, the M1, the M5 and the M5A1. For the long Gew.98 WW1 German rifle, I had the long M1898 'quillback" and the M1905 "butcher" type.
In the pre-internet days, I would mostly get them at gun shows or from mail order surplus companies.
I feel that to have a military rifle, you should have the right sling and bayonet, and of course some ammo and maybe magazines and/or stripper clips.

Sweet. I'll need to get mine together in order to get a good pic. I just found an original Monopod for the Arisaka. I was surprised at how hard it was to find one of them seeing that most Japanese chucked them off their rifles once they were issued to them.

Awesome

I used to try to pick up bayonets, but then I had to source one for my Enfield No 5 Mk 1 and I got sticker shock. No pun intended.

I did eventually find a nice example, but no more. I've kinda grown out of that phase of collecting.

I think a good scenario for a bayonet, is to keep an angry person at distance when the situation hasn’t quite escalated to the point of shooting yet. People might still do stupid things if they don’t believe that you’d shoot, but few are stupid enough to charge straight at the tip of a bayonet.

Question for those more knowledgeable than me. I have a bayonet with what looks like a leather sheath. Sheath has a chunk missing. Has been in the family for probably 70+ years. Found it in the 70's when cleaning out my grandparents house

Blade is 16 3/4" long
Overall 21 1/2"

Markings make no sense to my untrained eye. looks 1907 on one side
Any idea of the age or what it might be off of?

Pattern 1907 bayonet for the SMLE.

You're missing the locking button.

Post 1913. I can't make out all the marks but ww1 seems right. Where's the pic of the scabbard?

@Picton beat me to it

For a collection piece I'd want the correct bayo.

I'm always tempted to get one for my 590 but common sense has prevailed so far - I have zero use for one.

I strive to have a bayonet for my surplus rifles and clones, but I'm not complete yet.

I still need to locate a reliable source for period correct bayonets for my M-14 clone and M1 Carbine.

I'm not even sure that these are period correct.

This Norinco Chinese Type 56 spike bayonet is period correct as it's non-detachable. ;)

Then there's these just for fun:
