Massachusetts Rifle Association - Woburn, MA

So I was at the range tonight and met this nice guy who let me shoot his Glock. He is a member on here and he left his loader on my bench in front of me.hoping he sees this post and sends me a pm to id it-so I can get it back to him. If it was you let me know what i was shooting and what reloads you had so I know it was you. I forgot your name.... sorry

If anyone is interested in know who is running for the BOD at MRA, a list was finally added at massrifleforum.com under the annoucements page.
I hope to see you all there.

Nice to put a face with the avatar, I figured you wouldn't have a bullhorn but at least you would be bald [wink].
I was the bald guy cleaning my revolver and speaking with Bobby Robinson while you guys were plate shooting.

I'm looking at becoming a member. I'm curious how the dues work, and if I join tomorrow, would I have to pay again by Dec 31 for next year, or are my initial dues good for next year? And I read they offer 8hrs of work for $50 off, if I were to choose to do work, can I do 8 hours prior to initiation to lower the initial cost?

the fun shoot is on Sunday the 17th of this month (see the flyer linked on post 490) they are having a special on membership then. would be a great day to see the club, try some of the events and different ranges. I did my qualify for the 50 yd Mclaughlin range today.

Interesting. We must go at different times because in the two years I've been a member, I have never seen half of them unusable.

I honestly do not recommend joining this club. I have belonged there for about 15yrs now and I am NOT renewing my membership. The indoor range is probably one of the most poorly kept ranges I have ever shot at. They have about 12 lanes and half of them are usually inoperable due to the target retrieval systems being broken.

Been a member for awhile and letting my membership lapse this year...seems more often than not that when i go the range is closed for whatever reason, or you have to wait to shoot because carriers 1, 4, 7, 9 and 10 are down, carrier 2 only travels to 30ft and i want to shoot rifle and carrier 3 will travel down the range, but the targets can't be retrieved

definitely better options in the area...not to mention the fact that half the time i'm there, i leave because there's too many yahoos and ninjas

Any longtime member of the MRA should know that MRA is a member supported club, with both dues and worktime. The dues for a club with full time employees to maintain ranges would clearly be much higher than the measly $120 annual membership fees the MRA charges.

I myself was at the club the last two Sundays, volunteering my time, repainting the baffles, repainting the floor, and updating the target carriers and cables. This was all being done concurrently with a $50k+ HVAC system upgrade for the indoor range. The indoor range should be back up in a week or so.

If you are an MRA member, my question is why weren't you helping too?

ok so a club that boasts having something around 2000 members whom all pay a $150 a year in dues, cant keep the loeb range operational? Then WTF are they doing with the $300k a year in dues? This needs further investigation.

A couple of points.
1. We put in a complete new target system 2 years ago. Unfortuantly, some members who do shoot wildly have been causing a lot of damage. We spent a great deal of money on this system and are constantly tring to keep it going. We spend an average of 5 hours per week fixing hits on the rails by members. Part of the problem is because we are the only range that allows rifles. Naturally, these do alot of damage. We are putting a contract in place with a supplier of cardboard to get just the right size cardboard so the targets will be hung at the right height. If this works the shots will go into the backstop and not the rails. Additionally, many people shoot of the bench to site in a new gun. They do not seem to realize that they are in fact shooting upwards. Once again, we are hoping the cardboard and making people think and use some common sense will help. Our attitude is we would rather fix things than put restrictions on the range.

2. We are putting in a complete new air handling system. This is state of the art and will make the Loeb range a much better place to shoot. At the same time we have been working on the tracks. This project is coming in on time and on budget.

3. As far as how we spend our money please come to any Board meeting (1st Monday of every month except July and August) and you can see the financlials. Don't forget none of us get paid, we are all volunteers. We put in alot of our own time to keep the place going. We are always looking for people to help. Please come on down, even if you just have ideas.

You've now realized if you criticize MRA, the usual group of people will pop in to criticize you. MRA is not for everyone. Some people love it. Others of us didn't renew our membership for various reasons.

I, for one, second your post.

Maybe MRA should use those wonderful cameras of theirs to find out who's doing the wild shooting and boot them? between the cameras and the log in book it shouldn't be hard to figure out...or maybe they should offer an IQ test as part of their requirements to join...some of the people i've seen shooting in there scare me with the dumb shit they do!

Trust me we are looking at the cameras. The problem is the range is open 24 hours per day. It is impossible to look at all the film. We are looking at more and more because of the damage. It seems every month we are finding several people who do stupid things and bring them before the board.

One problem is members never tell us when they see someone doing something wrong. Obviously, the first thing to do is tell the person nicely that they should not do whatever they are doing. But if it really bad, they should let the board know. All they need to do is write a note and leave it under the office door. They don't need to write their name. This would help us pinpoint incidents that are causing damage and get the person in to speak with them.

I also agree that people can be really stupid. You would be amazed when we bring people in front of the board that we remember these people as being "normal" when we went through the interview process and orientation. It just seems that once they get their key fob that some people leave their brain at home.

We are really trying to figure out what we can do differently to make the system better. Please if you have some ideas stop by and let us know. We don't want to screw things up for the good people and make more range rules. All this does is punish the safe shooter for the unsafe shooter's bad behavior.

Seriously if anyone out there has any ideas on what to do we would love to hear them. Sometimes the board feels like we are yelling into the wind.

That may be true for some of the board. Certainly not my experience. When I was a member, I mentioned several issues. I was told I needed to write it up, with a solution, and hand out copies at the board meeting. Anything else was unacceptable.

That's when I canceled my membership. If I, as a member, RSO, and experienced shooter, see a problem and have a solution, I just can't email it? Post it? Call it in? I have to type it up, with copies, to present it to the board?

That was just one of many reasons I decided there were much better clubs in the area for me. I was right, too.

I'm not sure cameras will necessarily be much help. A camera will show who was shooting at a particular time, but it won't necessarily show you the particular shot that hit the header or rail. They probably already know who was shooting when. What they don't know is what time a round hit the header and who fired it.

Yeah, catching someone will be tricky. It will really be up to the membership.

Excuse my trolling on this. How about a few more cameras that catch the shooter and also the rails etc.? They would be in syns and it seems to me that the guessing game would be quite limited.
