Confirmed with my oldest son and his wife, both Army Combat Medics. ;)

If you're screaming, you're functioning.

I was always surprised in Vietnam when the guy you least expect screams like a little bitch with a minor wound!
I was always surprised when the guy you expected most to scream took it like a SEAL.

The boot camp buddy of mine was picked on for the whole time. Thick glasses (don't know how he got in).

Came back after a tour on PBR's with a Silver Star, Bronze Star, 2 Purple hearts, Vietnam CIB and all the other normal action ribbons. Respect was given.

Interesting subject. I always wonder if what I think is pain others do as well.

I got hit by car in my 40s. Snapped my collar bone. I got up was walking around while the cops and ambulance were on their way. Medic shows up and has me sit. The minute I sit I wanted to just close my eyes and take a nap. She wouldn't let me. Still didn't feel the pain. Never got any drugs the entire time. To this day collar bone never reattached. Collar bones are overrated, haha.

Got my appendix removed. Soon as I was coherent I was out the door because I had my daughter's wedding to go to. Again, no meds. Pain, nothing more than an annoyance.

People around me are on all sorts of crap these days. Drugs for their back, knees, shoulders, etc. I'm almost 58. Do things like my back hurt? Of course. But who cares.

I don't like anything that masks pain. Having a leg severed I may think otherwise. But in general I think pain is good. It's your body telling you to stop doing things. Without pain I would just screw myself up worse because I would be too stupid to stop.
