I recently picked up a really nice numbers matching Russian M38 Carbine. They seem to be quite rare so I thought I would start a thread for everyone or anyone to post pictures of their M38 Carbines. Curious to see how many of them there are out there.

The big difference to my eyes is that the M38 did not have a bayonet or the ability to put one on, similar in that respect to the M1 Carbine

Yup, same animal, no fang (bayonet). Big fireball and big kick since its so much lighter than its big brother.

Yeah a previous owner refinished the stock apparently. I like it with the lighter stock actually, looks sharp IMO. I think its boiled linseed oil rubbed after stripping. Don't know if the metal is original or arsenal refinished back when they put it in a 44 stock. Not a recent refinish.

Reading the Mosin book the 38's were arsenal refinished after the war, many got the laminate stock like mine, others would get whatever stocks they had around. The Ruskies didn't go in for $500 toilet seats and didn't like we did in the Navy deep 6 brand new stuff in boxes in order to use up or budgets buying the exact same things again.

I wonder how many 38's vs. 44's there are, what sort of percentage?

The thing I need now is a 91/30 Hex barrel, I have a couple regular 91/30's and a "repro" sniper and the M44 and M38 and 2 Nagants, one from Tula and one from Ishapore

Yeah it really is, thanks. As soon as I saw it I grabbed it! Good shooter too, the bore is in very good condition despite a counterbore. Oh and it was my first milsurp too!
