what's the obsession? This is not a question criticizing these rifles but I've never seen a mil surp anything take off into orbit as these guys have done. Not just on here but almost every major gun magazine has written about them. So what's up with these rifles I'm missing? I'm not really a rifle shooter but someone tell me what the attraction is and I might get one. Hell, some of you guys talk more lovingly about your Mosins than I bet you do the woman in your lives. And I think there's a few women on here that own one as well.

It's cheap, and the ammo it uses is cheap (for the power it delivers) and the thing is probably highest in terms of the BOOM to dollar ratio going out there.

i would own one based on the sole fact that it is cheap to own/shoot. also, i like the style of rifle.

Just the stunning amount of mosins produced should peak the interest of most shooters. They have been made for a long time and by many countries. Also the fact that you can buy a rifle and 440 rounds for 200.00 bucks and all but the worst of the bunch should shoot within the black circle of a SR1 target with alittle practice is just hard to beat.
The cheapest 30/06 runs about 60 cents per round and there is not a rifle anywhere close in price or accuracy for under 200.00 not to mention history.

Then there's the saying......" if you need to ask you just don't get it "

17 Million were made, therefore there are a few left. $90-150 in price, mostly accurate, larger round that is also cheap, etc.
I have yet to shoot mine, only cleaned it completely.

Like everyone else has said. It is a cheap gun, with cheap ammo, and a lot of fun to shoot.
And the history behind it.
Very accurate, very loud, and kicks like a mule. I can hit the black at 100yds, with no scope.
For around $.20/round milsurp, it's not worth reloading yet.
Just make sure you immediately clean the barrel after using the milsurp corrosive ammo.
I have a 1903 Springfield, that is also fun to shoot, but the ammo costs more. That is until I get my reload bench setup this summer.

Noone has even mentioned the historical value of owning something that was used to kill some Nazis! And Each one is like a book with its own story in the markings.

It's the most fun you can have with something so ugly...kidding..kind of.

Like that chubby babe after 2am [laugh]

I don't own a Mosin, yet, but I have fired a few and let me tell you it's worth twice the price of the gun just to see everyone else at the gun range jump 3 feet in the air when you squeeze one off. I plan to get one in the near future.

I'll put it slightly differently. WW2 have become increasingly popular and with that increasingly expensive and hard to find.... A Nagant offers anyone not only the opportunity to own a genuine battle riffle that most likely was used in service in at least one war, but also the ability to actually shoot it. There are probably a few arisakas that you could find for $100, and maybe a m95 steyr your could buy for under $150 but look luck buying or affording large qtys of ammo for either of them.

One of my last Nagants I picked up at a gun show had documented evidence that parts of the rifle had seen action in WW1, being captured by the Austrians and then being sold to Finland and being converted and used against the Russians in the Continuation War/WW2. How can you beat that for $180???

My advice would be, go buy a Nagant (or 10 ) and shoot it, take care of it and hold on to it.... At some point we'll all be saying " remember when a Mosin Nagant was only $80!"

Please tell me where within 40 minutes of Worcester (covers a LARGE part of MA) I can find one for $80. I will go there today and get it. No rustbuckets or clunkers.

$80 deals are typically found online. Shops usually have 91/30's for the $125 range. If you order one online and pay shipping, it equals out. Support a shop, and pay the $125!

You won't find $80 at a shop most likely. I know IDC has them, but I believe there $120.

Online it was very easy to get them under $100 with shipping, but even those deals are drying up

No, it really doesn't!

A lot of what you find in the shops is the huge billboard labeled Nagants that are no where near as nice as what can be purchased online.

Please elaborate on this. I thought surplus was surplus.

With my admitted limited experience with C&R firearms I would disagree with "surplus is surplus". Yes , it is all extra "junk" military's no longer need and sell off. But there is different grades which importers bid on with certain intent on how they will resell. How much of a difference does this make? It's up to you. I personally dislike some of the HUGE import marks on the receiver, so I buy from company's that sell nicer.... But my FFL 03 allows me to do this easier than if I didn't have it.

I AM NOT claiming to be an expert by any means, all I'm saying is what I've done, and paid and why I like Mosin Nagants

Collectors in Merrimack NH has 20+ of these in stock. Their prices are about $2 more than what i can buy them on line with my CR. and I can handpick them!!

no sales tax in NH,,,, mass residents can buy rifles in NH,,,,,, so if you are close.to the border......
