Took my Mosin to the range the other day to get it ready for a friend of mine to come by and shoot one for the first time. Put a round in the chamber and no issue. Pulled the bolt back, ejected the empty case, pushed the bolt forward and BANG. I did the same operation, this time making sure it wasn't something I did. BANG again.

When the bolt moves, it doesn't reset the trigger. I'm sure I can take it apart and fix it without an issue, but has this happened to anyone else? Is this what is called a slam fire?

yes, sounds like your Fpin is stuck? are you slaming the bolt home hard?

The action is a bit stiff so I do have to use a bit of force, but not so much that the round is going to go off due to just that.

What is your firing pin set at? No, I would not call that a slam fire. In my use I reserve that for inertia fire from releasing a charging handle or slide after reloading. Don't use it until you get it fixed! Having a round go off while the bolt is not locked in battery might end with injury to your hand at best or the bolt coming out back at you.

Edit,
Did you check to see if the trigger spring screw had come loose? Thinking about the design, that being loose or too much shim under it could cause the same thing to happen.

check the firing pin with your mosin tool, it may also be stuck, or sticking out too far and you might have to back the screw on the back of the bolt out a bit.

Firing pin setting
check against the tool that came with the rifle
if no tool available search the web,
sounds like either pin sticks out too much or inside is so cosmolined that it froze in place. or both

Checking the firing pin definitely

Have you disassembled recently? You sure it went back together properly?

I know when learning how to do mine, I could assemble it with the pin out too far....

Im definitely going to check the firing pin this weekend. Odd thing is that I haven't disassembled it for months and its shot fine since then. Maybe some cosmoline I missed has worked it's way to the pin making it stick forward.

i would disassemble and clean the bolt up really well, not sure if its the best way to do it but i boil mine in a pot of water and then wash it down really well with powder blaster/brake cleaner. dunk it in a thing of wheel bearing grease reassemble (making sure to check the pin set with the tool) and you'll be gtg.

Probably just needs a good cleaning, how new to you is it? Might still be caked in cosmoline on the internals.

I got it in the last Mosin buy we had here. I actually broke the whole thing down, refinished the wood, and put all the metal pieces in mineral spirits and hot water. I thought I got it all out. Perhaps not.

Some bolts are completely gummed up with old grease. Check to see if the firing pin moves at all and if doesn't then disassemble the bolt and remove the pin and scrub the channel.

I probably won't be able to break it down until next weekend. I'll post the report and pictures then.
