Just passed my test today. I have ordered a beofeng gt-3 mark II. I am mostly interested in having the radio for emergency coms. Any pointers on what to do to start becoming farmilliar with different nets and procedures? I'm in Haverhill is that helps at all. Im excited to make my first transmition but woried that i will be limited only having a handheld. Is this the case or is my thinking flawed.

Congrats...we are in the same boat. I just go my license on Dec 1 and I had a HT for the first couple weeks.

Repeaters will be your friend for now.

There is a repeater in Haverhill.
145.350 - MA Haverhill KT1S 136.5 Essex

So, just tune the radio to 145.350 to listen into the net. Not sure when Haverhill has their nets, but googling can probably help there.

If the GT-3 is anything like my UV82, you will want to spend the money and buy a programming cable to program the radio for repeater use. Then, find a program called Chirp. http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Home This app will make it much easier to program.

Also, look into an app called Echolink...you can get it for the PC/Mac/iOS/Android. You'll need to provide a copy of your license to them, but once active, you can use it to connect to TONS of repeaters and links worldwide.

Good luck and 73s!

Congrats on the license.

A HT will be fine for a while, eventually you may want to consider upgrading your license and getting into HF but I had just my HT for the first two years I was licensed.

for longer range you can try using the fm ham satellites like SO-50, I have heard Florida from MA on it, but no QSO, my best QSO on SO-50 was northern VT from the Nashua NH area. You can lookup the ham sat passes on http://www.n2yo.com
