I’d like to install optics on a G34 and I’d like to know what mounting option makes the most sense. It sounds like the poorest option is a straight up dovetail mount and the best would be either buying a milled slide or having the smith mill the factory slide if there’s enough meat on the bone. What should I put first? The optic or the mounting method. I could buy something optic ready but the shelves in MA aren’t that exciting right now. Can I even send the slide out of state for milling? Thanks.

What @Mesatchornug said. Choose your optic first.

Then send the slide to get it milled. I've used Wager Machine Works several times and I've been very happy with the results. He doesn't cut slides for the next gun I want to get milled so that one will probably go to Battlewerkz. The Littleton mill has someone doing cuts too but I'm not familiar with them.

Alternatively, you could get a Brownells G17 slide that's already cut for an optic. I have one and it's been flawless (with OEM Glock internals).

I wouldn't bother trying to do a dovetail mount, I've heard nothing positive about them from anyone who actually shoots their guns.

I have an optics ready G19 and G26 slide from aimsurplus that run great (I have swampfox red dots on them), and a PSA G19 optics slide that is also good. Aimsurplus makes a G34 length slide. All of mine are RMR cut.

You can have your slide milled or you can buy an optic ready slide from Brownells, Midway, etc. Don’t waste money on a dovetail optic mount.

I have a Zev duty optic cut slide on my G45 and had my 43X cut by Jagerworks. Both are well done. I don’t see any problem with cutting the factory slide if you can’t find an aftermarket one you like.

Now that’s a well answered question. If I have the OEM slide milled will that entail having the whole thing blued? I don’t know if GD precision mills slides but I’ll ask him. It’s so much cheaper to have the current slide milled than buy a new slide already cut and I don’t think I need any additional cut-outs. (I don’t think”
Now I have to research optics and there seems to be a lot of choices. A lot of people say I can’t go wrong with Holosun, Eotech ot Tridgicon but my word Holosun alone has a boatload of options. I was sure that Dovetailed would be frowned soon, just not enough contact points. I’ll YouTube it but how big is a 5” or 6” inch MOA at 10 yards?
Thanks Guys you’ve been helpful.

I prefer a smaller dot, 2.5 MOA in the Trijicon for me. I have seen others recommend the larger 5-6 MOA for older eyes. I figure I can always bump up the brightness on the smaller dot. I purchased a couple of Holosun optics, the SCS for Glock MOS and one of the standard ones, both with green dots. My eyes definitely prefer the red.

The company i posted will put the finish back onto the milled portion of the slide. They did a really good job.

GD Precision has another slide going out tomorrow morning if I get mine there I’ll get it back pretty quickly. It will probably cost a couple more bucks to have them send it out but here in MA we gotta hold on to anything that’s brick and mortar we can and I’m lucky to have a good smith close to home. I think I’ll start another thread on choosing an optic which is going to be the difficult/complicated part of the process isn’t it?. So many options, prices and variables to contend with. I gotta try it. The last few trips to the range has successfully confirmed I’m getting old and I can’t see the target. I thought it was the reloads I was trying but a bud shot a few mags and hit fine so it wasn’t the ammo.
Thanks a lot you guys. You’ve been very helpful..

If you send the optic slide before you select the optic, you risk selecting an optic that uses a different footprint...

this is who did mine.

Battlewerx did a great job on mine. I had the entire slide black nitride'd. I shipped the optic with the slide and had him mount it: I have a bad habit of over torquing fasteners.

I Had a bit of a scare when UPS delivered it the wrong address. I didn't recognize the picture of the porch. Luckily the person was nice and delivered it to my door within a few hours.

So I shouldn’t send the slide out to be milled tomorrow because I don’t know what sight I’m going to put on it. I’ll study up on Red Dots. That’s part of the fun ain’t it! Maybe I should have just asked what sight did you put on your G34 and do you like them. Thanks.

5 or 6 MOA is quite small at 10 yards. This is a handgun, not a rifle.

Most USPSA competitors prefer larger dots. I prefer 5 or 6 MOA over a smaller dot.

For a Glock 34, you can fit the larger red dots, most of which use the RMR footprint. Since this isn’t a concealed carry gun, I recommend that you choose a red dot with a larger window. Some examples would be the Trijicon SRO, Holosun 509T, Holosun 507 Comp.

I recommend against using a Trijicon RMR. The RMR is designed for concealed carry and has a much smaller window. It is much easier to keep the dot in the window during recoil on optics with a larger window, like an SRO. As a result, I find that I am faster with the SRO than the RMR.

I just put a Horosun 507 Comp on my Gen 5 G34, lots of reticle options which is nice, and as @M1911 said above the window is nice and large, noticeably larger than the 507C I have on my Ruger Mark IV.

Mine being a Gen 5 MOS I used the Glock plate but as others have said you can get your slide milled for whatever footprint you choose.

Now I have some sights to look at! I didn’t realize that makers offered so my options. So many choices but it’s difficult to find the differences googling and watching YouTube videos with AI generated voices and no detail. Holosun seems popular and has a decent price point for my first exposure to Red Dots but i think I’m going to take a few days to chew on it. What is RMR an acronym for?
