Quietest AR muzzle device?

Depends on where youre measuring the sound, but least gay option probably a flash hider.

The surefire warden will put more of the sound forward, but is better than a brake on the sides

Now that un-pin day has passed, what is the quietest AR muzzle device, or least obnoxious in term of sound pressure level, that isn't technically a silencer under the ATF definition?
A forward director works great, looks stupid but gives the option to have it or just go with a brake.

Or go with a linear compensator if you always want quiet

i was always wondering with such blast deflectors - does it neglect completely effect from those 3 ports to reduce recoil, or is it still working?
i have a similar one on the larue brake i have, custom made, but it was always inconclusive to me and i did not bother to measure. $58 is a good price.

So what's wrong with better hearing protection and a brake that's loud enough to clear benches beside you? [laugh]

Honest answer to your question- the most quiet brake is no brake. Muzzle protector and done if the barrel end is threaded. Everyone is so caught up in the AR Barbie dress up program that they forget the simple (and cheap) answer. No stones from me- I'm just as guilty as the next person for the AR Barbie dress up nonsense, but for match shooting anywhere the AWB is in force I'll either have a simple crowned muzzle or a pin and weld muzzle thread protector.

Neglects.

I found a test a while back, the guy actually measuring decibels and all that. After watching that, I came to the conclusion that blast deflectors are not worth the $$.

The reason I researched it was for a hunting gun. I wanted to reduce noise a bit in case I had to take a shot without ear pro. Instead I spent the $ on good, electronic ear protection that I could use for 8hrs and not be uncomfortable.

Just don't use a muzzle brake. It is not like most AR15 have some sort of uncontrollable recoil. They are all pretty damn soft shooting.

For 223, I can't tell the difference other than the lack of concussion blast.
In theory it would make the recoil worse since it it forcing all of the blast directly forward.

This - they don't reduce the peak sound level.
However they do reduce the felt concussive blast to those around you (and you if you are shooting with a roof or walls around you)

Just get a flash hider. They’re functional and also not obnoxious.

If you’re firing indoors, a linear comp doesn’t really help much compared to a flash hider due to the sound bouncing off everything. If you’re firing outdoors, flash hiders are fine. I’ve never found ARs with flash hiders on an outdoor firing line to be bad at all.

One other thing to consider, the action itself on an AR is pretty damned loud. I’ve run it with my ear next to it and it made my ear ring for a minute. A linear comp doesn’t help with that.
