I currently live in the socialist paradise known as Boston, came here for my undergrad degree and am going to start in a doctoral program at Tufts (Chinatown campus) next year. I would like to move to a city that is LTC-A ALP friendly but isn't too hard to get downtown and back using mass transit every day, with the hopes of getting the restrictions on my LTC lifted or reapplying for an ALP license. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Providence.

Seems to me that I remember a train running from South Station to Providence every day.

OK, seriously, if you don't mind a farther commute, Framingham or Marlboro might be good; they're on the Worcester line and you can take the train right into South Station.

Fitchburg to North Station is a nice Commuter rail too. Some fairly reasonable towns along that route.

Via the subways, Arlington is the best bet. Some nice places walking distance to the Ailwife station. You also have quick access to Rt 2 to get out of there.

What Chris said...

+1 on the Fitchburg commuter line. N. Leominster is an "automatic" LTC-A community. When they fill out the form on the computer, the clerk automatically selects "all lawful purposes" and the result has been a LTC-A license. Unless, of course, you have a very checkered history...

Wherever you start looking, check into the parking situation carefully. At many T-stops, the available parking fills up very quickly, so if you don't get there early, you don't get a spot. The Alewife garage fills up daily.

Some of the commuter stations are ridiculous. For example, the parking lot at the Kendall Green stop fills up by the second train of the day. Also, note that North Station is not that close to Chinatown.

Grafton or Westborough I hear is are good towns as well. The T station is off the beaten path a bit but the train runs right into South Station.

Chelsea, Lynn, and Danvers may be decent bets if you like those towns.

Weymouth is a little farther, but it's on the red line and isn't a horrendous ride. They issue ALP's as I understand it.

+1... Leominster and Fitchburg are basically green. Problem is the
damned commuter rail. While it is fine for going in and out of boston,
it makes for a hell of a long day. I work in cambridge and I can beat
the train 99 out of 100 times. Hard to believe it, but I won an hour plus of my
life back every day by driving. Then that one time your on it that the
train breaks down, you will be pissed- and it always happens in the middle of the
summer on the hottest damned day. I would use it if I had to work
in boston, but only grudgingly. The only consolation prize is if your
adept at catching catnaps and reading it gives you plenty of time to do
that.

The summer also sucks cause they cut cars off the train and thus
capacity.... so the ride out is always fun as you have to sit next to
some disease ridden moonbat. (When I used to ride the train I would
get a cold a year guaranteed.... now I don't get them at all!)

Course, your price of rent will probably cut in half, too.

My vote for Vell's case would still be Arlington.

Come down to the south shore. Hanson is LTC-A friendly and the first commuter Rail train leaves the Hanson station at 6:00 am.

I love living in this town!
