The difference between cover and concealment

Great Example

Ross,

Great example. I saw a similar demonstration on HGTV from a company selling a true "safe room" door. He only used a .45 (no .223) but his door
stop the bullets cold where as the wood and metal doors stopped nothing.
Only the pretty wood trim covering of his door was damaged. Pretty cool.

Again, as you say, this is a very good lesson to learn from.

Yeah that's a great site. I go there often to see what he has been up to. I like that he shoots with a LARGE variety of guns to show how the stop/penetrate the different materials.

Adam

Perhaps one of the more interesting and informative sites relating to firearms and shooting. He actually goes out and tries various things to see how they really work.

How about car doors? I've often wondered, since you always see movie cops hiding behind car doors, how much stopping power is there in those things?

THey can stop some small caliber pistol rounds. Rifle? Forget it.

Depends on the year too. Modern doors with the side impact and all the stuff for the electric windows and locks have more metal than you think. Most handguns will be stopped even a .357 magnum, and if hit in the right places, even a .44 magnum. Rifle rounds do better, but get deflected easily. The most impressive was a shotgun slug. In the several shots, most went throught he first door and out the opposite one.

If you really want to make sure that you don't get hit by someone shooting at you and there's a car around - get behind the front of the car and the engine block. Yes, I know, there are some guns that will go through that, but the chances of finding someone on the street with one of them shooting at you is less than willing the lottery.

I'll agree to that. The lowly 12 guage slug is far more powerful at close range than most people think.

My right shoulder has informed me in no uncertain terms EXACTLY how powerful that round is... :) since that's what we have to use for hunting here in PRM.

I cringe at the thought of sighting in my Mossberg before hunting season starts... I know I'm gonna hurt the day after. One reason why if I really get into it I'll be getting a CF rifle and hunting out of state. Got a friend who might be getting a camp up in Maine, and another friend who's buying property in NH.

get behind the front of the car and the engine block.

I have heard that hiding behind a wheel, if the angle works, is better. Much more material plus cover all the way to the ground.

After reading the article about the stopping power of sand, I would advise that all cops fill their cars (including tires and gas tank) with sand. Then they can safely hide behind any area of the car they want without any ill effects...
