RANCHO CUCAMONGA - A jewelry store employee was briefly hospitalized Wednesday afternoon after a fellow worker accidentally shot him in the leg.

San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies responded to a shooting at Ben Bridge Jewelers about 1:30 p.m. in Victoria Gardens, according to a sheriff's statement.

When they arrived, deputies found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg, the statement said.

Deputies learned that an employee brought a gun to work with him. That employee, whose name was not released, placed the gun in a drawer in the break room.

Not realizing the firearm was real, a fellow worker picked up the gun after spotting it while she put something away in the same drawer, the statement said. The gun then went off. A bullet struck the employee in his lower leg. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he was treated and released a few hours later, the statement said.

An employee at the jewelry store said his vice president told him not to discuss the incident.

There were no arrests made Wednesday, but the incident is still under investigation, sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller said.

‘‘We can never be sure what will happen upon the District Attorney's review, but they will definitely be submitting a report,'' Miller said.

There was no information available on why the store employee brought a gun to work or whether the jewelry store had been recently robbed.

Yeah, the gun just went off. Nobody aimed it at somebody. Nobody pulled the trigger. The wording of the article is a subtle example of the media and they way they view guns and gun safety. Horrible.

Telling people that guns just go off. That's irresponsible journalism.

Magical

In saying that the gun went off, the reporter was implying it was one of those new handguns with a motion activated trigger. Of course these are banned in Mass for obvious reasons. [smile]

Soon they will start reporting about cars just starting up and slipping into gear running over pedestians.

Or knives that just leap from the block to slice and dice people.

Or hammers that mysteriously fall onto someone's head from the toolbox in the basement.

It's really very simple you idiots - THEY PULLED THE F***ING TRIGGER!!!! Intentional or not, they pulled it.

Too late, the SUVs have been the pioneers of this phenomenon.

I thought that back in the 80's Saab had the same problem. I just remember a car that was just slipping into gear while running and placed in park.

No; it was Audi. And it was false.

The REAL reason was old farts who'd only driven American boats hitting the gas pedal (closer to the accelerator because Audi sold lots of manual transmission vehicles) when they thought it was brake.

Still happens, with any number of different cars. Same basic reason, though: Incompetent operators.[rolleyes]

I'm sure Mr Reilly will get right on that issue:

Cars should have gas pedals with 100# minimum resistance and three separate safety mechanisms to prevent accidental acceleration

He'll keep us safe! Reilly for Gov!!

I love it when my guns go off by themselves. It takes all the blame out of the lousy groupings that appear when I shoot 9mm. It's not my fault. It's that damn gun!

My single-stack doubled on me at the pin & plate shoot (ask Cross-X!). Missed the plate, but had a KILLER split time (.017 or some such insane time)!

Does THAT count as "going off by itself?"

Maybe if Audi bought Glock..........

[rofl] thanks Scrivener. I'll need to add this to the list of useless stuff I buy for my guns.....barrel condoms.

You only laugh because you never carried a rifle through constant torrential rain, knowing that at a second's notice you might have to use it to save your ass. Condoms for rifles are definitely worthwhile, though I wouldn't particularly bother with the either the special "rifle" ones or fancy colors; the regular ones work just fine.

Ken, not trying to be a wise ass..."momma always said never go out in the rain with out your rubbers" and bless be to the unit who started to cover the barrels to start this easy fix of keeping crap out of bore and mechanicals!

and who the hell buys used "condoms"?!?

Quote from that site:
"The Redz Comfort Gear Barrel Condom is newer, so it should be commonly available, both new and used."

I don't even want to speculate, although I'm certain that some of members who are still in middle school, despite their advanced degrees, will be more than eager to do so. [wink]
