transfer question, shotgun question

buddy wants to give me a shotgun he picked up at an estate sale. can I just register it and good to go or best to involve an FFL?

said shotgun is a Mossberg Maverick 88 cruiser. no stock, 16.5" barrel. Might have originally been a topfolder, unsure.
