Three men who police said held a Texas City family at gunpoint and then led police on a high-speed chase Wednesday morning formally were charged Friday.

Whitehead said that’s when a man demanded the keys to the truck while pointing an assault rifle at him, his wife and their 15-year-old son.

Kenneth Ferris, whose house was nearby, told police he came outside to investigate the ruckus and fired four rounds from his gun.

That prompted the three men to take off
in the Ford F-150, but not before smashing the truck into a parked car.

Goetchius said the gun used in the hold up was a Kel-Tec assault subrifle, a rifle with a folding stock that shoots pistol cartridges.

It was among 89 weapons stolen from a Webster house in 2009.

All three men were being held in the Texas City jail Friday on bonds of $250,000 each.
