Un-pinned/welded comp on pre ban rifle ok?

Hello, I have a pre 94’ ban Norinco MAK 90. Barrel is currently unthreaded but I would like to thread it and add a comp. Do I need to have that comp permanently attached or because it’s pre ban is that not necessary?
Located in MA.

Heard it isn’t the easiest to thread the barrel (keeping it all centered). Just tread carefully and find a competent shop so you don’t create an ugly paperweight or “best case” unusable threads.

I threaded mine myself, but just have a shop do it for simplicity sake.
