3 Day bag with LBV

You would spend between $40k and $160k. Most of the hard work is done (paths, steps, signs) by previous decades and centuries of hikers. You "just" have to walk up the hill and you'll probably have a few dozen others in the group. Each paying similar amounts. It's big business now. You do know I didn't really hike Mt E, right?

Nepal has cracked down on photo rights (because the volume of traffic is embarrassing to them) but here are a couple shots of hikers summiting Everest...

Yes, those really are pictures of people climbing Everest. Not me, but real people.
Thats not how I imagined it. That looks like there are people at regular intervals holding a clipboard and yelling, "LET'S GO PEOPLE!! KEEP IT MOVING!!"

It sort of trivializes the whole concept...

I don't mean to minimize the effort it takes to summit the mountain, but "today" is nothing like the experience of climbers 50 - 100 years ago. THOSE climbers were Olympics material.

My dad did LRP (long range patrols) in Vietnam, two tours. He told me what he carried:

10 loaded M16 20 round mags
1000 rounds of 556 on stripper clips in bandoleers
a belt or two of ammo for the M60
3 weeks of freeze dried food (LRATs, long range rations)
water purification tabs
extra socks
poncho
I think an IFAK

That was all. I might have left some out but not much. No extra clothes etc. just ammo and food. He said they would patrol for about three weeks, rest a week then do it again, for I think a year, then the tour was over. He also carried the explosives for the 2nd LT who was apparently a pyro and liked to blow stuff up.

I tend to trade weight for comfort. Carrying a heavy load sucks, but being miserable after a hard day of marching sucks a lot more. Your morale/mindset takes a major hit and messes with your head. I don’t have a 3 day pack tho. Mine is a surplus large ALICE. No way am I going to be without tarp/footprint, a folding saw or similar items I deem necessary without being vital. Nothing worse than being wet and cold and then not being able to get a fire going because even the standing dead wood is soaked, so you can’t even have a warm soup or something. ESBIT stove lives matter.
