Active Shooter Situation in Lewiston Maine

This gets better and better…..so he would have presumably gotten his shiny new voice-emitting hearing aids from the VA, correct?

Are we using the VA to turn vets into mass shooters now?

“The family of the Army reservist accused of fatally shooting more than a dozen peoplein Lewiston, Maine, alerted police and military officials that he was experiencing an “acute” mental health episode before the Wednesday night massacre, the suspect’s sister-in-law said.

Robert Card, 40, a firearms instructor and longtime member of the Army Reserve, began to hear voices that were saying “horrible” things about him a couple of months ago when he was fitted for high-powered hearing aids, according to Katie Card, who is married to his brother.

“He was picking up voices that he had never heard,” she told NBC News. “His mind was twisting them around.

He was humiliated by the things that he thought were being said.”

Katie Card said the family did their best to reassure Robert Card that the comments were not real, including by verifying with some of the people he claimed had made the remarks. But, she said, “it turned into a manic belief.”

A legit call for ERPO. I'd say 'convenient' but there's enough of these people out there, it was just a matter of time.

A gunshot to center mass while wearing soft armor can kill you even if it stops the bullet. Rifle rounds zip right through it, but even though they stop a 9mm or such, it can break ribs. My armor had a small steel trauma plate to hopefully protect from that to some degree.

Yeah, rifles sure. But I was talking about CCW responding to someone with armor, hence the pistol cartridge. I guess one can die from a hit to their soft armor with a pistol, but if the armor is rated for the caliber, it’s safe to say that would be rare. The ratings account for possible back face deformation. I think fatalities would generally be attributed to underlying health/heart conditions. Though, I would certainly buy someone easily getting the wind knocked out of them from a pistol hit to soft armor.

And yeah, if I know someone is armored but they’re too far away for a headshot, I’m still going to send some rounds their way to try and interrupt their OODA loop while trying to maneuver.

As to reserve/guard training, I was in a pretty good unit and we trained tactics pretty hard. We could only get live ammo and a range as often as the Army said so however. Once a year minimum, sometimes twice and it was just qualification shooting. Nothing like you would get at any of these good civilian schools.

Sadly the reserves have begun to rely on EST simulators for weapons training and qualifications. Especially for units that don’t own any weapons. My last unit would only do EST for qualifications my last few years there. But fortunately they did let you reschedule drills so that attending civilian firearm training or even doing your own personal (yet structured) training counted as drill time.

The voices started when he was fitted with the hearing aids. It's a bit tinfoily but I would say plausible that those voices were coming from a transmitter in a nearby white van.
I would be interested if the hearing aids were from the VA first

Just out of curiosity, what makes it obvious that this one is a conspiracy?
Wait wait wait...

I've been out of the office most of the day. Did we in fact conclude this guy is/was a

Did they go away if he took them out?

Feel like that is very easy to baseline
If he needed high power hearing aids, he probably had a very difficult time hearing without them, so every voice, even those that are real would go away. If the voices didn't go away when taking them out, it would probably have been easier for him to believe that they weren't real. I'm not promoting any conspiracy theory at all, but it's by no means farfetched that someone was transmitting sounds/voices to him as a means to manipulate him. Technologically, the concept is no different than wireless earbuds.

I can neither rule this in or out.

However, if the hearing aids were generating any sort of low level hiss or hum, a diseased mind will take that random noise and make it into words supporting the mental illness. I view this as more likely than the white van scenario.

Gun Owners’ Action League Statement on the Horrific Events in Maine
Only one word comes to mind regarding the horrific murders in Lewiston, Maine on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 - “Anger”!
Systemic%20failure%20nationwide%20on%20Mental%20Health.png
From all accounts, this was entirely preventable. The families of the victims, and indeed the entire nation, should be furious at the systemic failure that led to this atrocity.

Since the Newtown massacre in 2012, GOAL has adamantly fought to get our government officials, and the general public, to acknowledge the number one common denominator involved in these tragically preventable events – Severe Mental Health Issues.

According to reports, the killer may have been involuntarily committed to a mental health facility and released even after admitting that he wanted to cause serious harm. This automatically made him a prohibited person from possessing a gun. The fact that he was released is simply unconscionable.

Our government officials have wasted more than a decade pushing for more gun control on lawful citizens, when they are fully aware it is the tremendously failed mental health policies and systems. Shame on them. Their lack of professional logical action on severe mental health is costing lives.

Arguing over what type of gun a psychotic killer has access to is insane. The simple matter is someone who has this level of dangerous mental health issues shouldn’t have access to society. They should be getting proper 24-hour care, not just temporarily monitored, and cast out into the public to lose control.

GOAL is calling on federal, state, and local officials to end their crusades against the lawful Second Amendment community and seriously address the matter at hand – severe mental health. DO YOUR JOB!

Does anyone know if Maine sends its Psychiatric holds to say a state hospital..

I bet IF we ever know what hospital he was in it probably was a private psych hospital..

Then as I recall in MA for example there is a “psych hold” meaning observation.. then after 3 days… you go in front of a judge and they say so and so is nuts.. and they are committed to the psych hospital until the judge releases them.

I also think the paper work or due to insurance or just not caring the active shooter guy was released after the “psych hold”… oh well nothing to see here.

Even then how can they find the guns in time it’s just ridiculous and a feel good measure…
Just like restraining orders in domestic violence..

Also it’s interesting they send a man armed with an ar-15 to stop another man armed with an AR-15…

As far as I know there's only the records at ones PCP office, but I see no other way to redflag these people besides merging the systems. I'm all for HIPAA but whackos can't continue to hide behind it. I don't have all the answers but this should be looked at. Every time there's a shooting like this it hurts us good guys.
Yeah that won’t help anything. Then you’re going to stop people from trying to treat their mental health. There was a record 49,000 suicides last year and will continue to grow as we head into a nasty recession in the near future.

It’s not HIPPA for therapy. You want anyone who goes to therapy to have a therapist report everything to the police? They wouldn’t have time to deal with anything else.

As someone who has been to some extensive therapy You’re supposed to talk things out and work on correcting the bad or wrong behaviors. If you just bury it, it doesn’t work. If you made anyone who has any mental ailment banned from owning guns you are going to have people never seek treatment.

You would also eliminate most vets from ever owning a gun or seeking help from mental illness from service time.

Therapy is a good thing and personally have found it extremely beneficial. If you make it this reporting platform it’s not going to help the situation. Again not trying to pile on, but it’s not the answer. I don’t know the answer either myself.
