AG Guns Lowell, MA

I just recently got my license. The day it came in I knew what I wanted: Ruger MkIII 5 1/2 bull barrel. I stopped by AG Guns after picking up the license. I knew they had the best price after comparing online, but they didn't have it in stock. Dennis was very nice and offered to order it. I was too impatient and paid $20 more at four seasons. When it was time for my second purchase (two Ruger 10/22's) I went back to AG's. They had THE best price. It was about 10% lower than others. They didn't have it in stock but this time I wasn't in a rush. Dennis ordered them and Greg checked me out (less than a week later). Great prices, nice staff, and best of all close to home. I know I'll be buying there many times.

My second trip to AG was today. A second AND STILL very pleasant experience!

While I didn't get what I went for, my bad for not researching further, I still did come away with a VERY pleasant Mossberg surprise. Thanks Dennis & Greg!!

These folks don't know me from a hole in the wall after only two visits, but Greg asked that I "guard" his truck while he loaded case after case of firearms for a course he was teaching tonight. Also, I gathered from the conversation between Dennis and the Postman that Dennis doesn't get to drive "his" car very often. This afternoon was a very nice, **private and personal**, experience (at no cost to me) that I can't believe can be matched elsewhere. I may have well as been dealing with family...

The opportunity to rummage a store, deal one-on-one with the principals and to talk about Sputnik, Russians, and the fate of the United States Socialist Republic (USSR) -- not to mention get a great deal on a firearm -- are worth all the hassle of actually having to use it while escaping Lowell.

That being said, if you go to AG, buy enough ammo to make it to the connector!!!! <joke>

I'LL BE BACK! (just as soon as I pay off this recent purchase.)

A.G. Guns, Lowell, MA

I know it is Lowell, but this is a great shop. Greg and Dennis are great to talk with about firearms. They made my first purchase very enjoyable, and I regularly update them on how I am doing at the range. They also do a lot of classes upstairs from their shop. They don't push the most expensive gun in the shop, in fact they helped fit me into a gun that fit better in my mitts than the high priced gun I was looking at and actually saved me a few bucks at the same time. Great shop, if you are in the area they are on Andover street opposite of the "Belvidere" neighborhood. They have a decent stock of guns, accessories, and ammo.

Greg and Dennis,

Apologies for the long delay in visiting again...life just gets in the way. Glad to run across this post revisited.

It's an ok shop service seems a little rude was not very impressed by the by the people that work there. Iwas treated like a thug off the street when i was dressed in my duty cloths.[frown]

That is unfortunate that you feel you were treated poorly. The guy Dennis that works there (big guy usually behind the center counter with Glasses and white hair) has a VERY unique sense of humor. My gf was a bit intimidated by his humor when I went in there with her. Greg, the owner, is hands down a great guy to know, very knowledgeable and helpful. Dennis can be very helpful as well after you cut through his humor.

Just wanted to give you some background before you make your final determination about the place.

ok will give them another try but happened twice i went in there

Both great guys to deal with. I drove 35 miles to get there because I was told that they had the best prices, new what they were doing, and had excellent customer service. I ordered a Sig back during the rush and it was nice to deal with a business that didn't give me the run a round, like others I have dealt with.

I Took my basic firearms there. My dad took his there too. I've only been there a couple of times but both times it was a good experiance. Sorry to hear that you had a bad time there.

THis is my favorite shop. Dennis does have a different sence of humor but as long as you know he is messing with you he is pretty funny. They always have good prices. I also took my Basic Firearms courese here, Top Notch.

I just thought I'd point this out as I was organizing my receipts from recent purchases.

Recently I purchased a firearm from A&G, very pleased with the service and the firearm. However, to my dismay, I was told I was going to be charged an additional 4% on top of the posted price because I wanted to use my Mastercard. Since I really wanted the firearm, I said whatever and let it be charged. No where that I noticed in the store or online is it posted that prices written on slips are cash only prices for used firearms. For their new stuff they list a cash and credit price, but not for preowned. I purchased a preowned firearm. Also, it's important to mention, the price written on the tag was $25 more than the price online which i had to have them fix after he looked it up.

Written right on the receipt it shows the price of the firearm, the 4% credit card processing fee, and the 6.25% Massachusetts sales tax. After a little research tonight, I found that it's actually illegal to charge this fee according to Massachusetts General Law Chapter 140D: Section 28A. The law in it's entirety can be read here:

http://www.mass.gov/legis/laws/mgl/140d-28a.htm

CHAPTER 140D. CONSUMER CREDIT COST DISCLOSURE

Chapter 140D: Section 28A. Cardholder discounts; surcharges; finance charge

Section 28A. (a)(1) With respect to a credit card which may be used for extensions of credit in sales transactions in which the seller is a person other than the card issuer, the card issuer may not, by contract or otherwise, prohibit any such seller from offering a discount to a cardholder to induce the cardholder to pay cash, check or similar means rather than use a credit card.

(2) No seller in any sales transaction may impose a surcharge on a cardholder who elects to use a credit card in lieu of payment by cash, check or similar means.

(b) With respect to any sales transaction, any discount from the regular price offered by the seller for the purpose of inducing payment by cash, check or other means not involving the use of an open-end-credit plan or a credit card shall not constitute a finance charge under section four if such discount is offered to all prospective buyers and its availability is disclosed clearly and conspicuously.

Am I wrong on this one or did A&G commit a big no-no?

Not a thing about cash prices.

In conclusion, if it was any other type of business I wouldn't hesitate to report them to the Attorney General, but since it's firearms and we're already in short supply of firearms stores in MA, I'm going to ignore it. If there ends up being something else preowned there again that I want and they try and pull those shenanigans again I guess I might have to sing a different tune.

I've heard nothing but bad things about AG. I stopped in once myself to look around when I was working in the area, and met the heavy guy with the white hair and glasses. I honestly have to say I have never been treated worse in my life. I went into the store well dressed, obviously not someone off the street, which is common for that area. I was treated like I was white trash, the guy couldn't be bothered to answer any of my questions, and it was obviously a short visit. Since then I have done business with Carl at Four Seasons, and from Mike Jr. and Sr. at Northeast Firearms, who have all provided excellent customer service. I don't know how AG could sell anything to anyone with their attitude.

Is this the shop that 20 years ago was in the back of a corner convenience store? I remember when they displayed there guns in an old deli case. You would walk in and think your in the wrong place. The guy behind the front register in the food store would point you toward the back. There would be guns and ammo in a case in front of you and HO-HO's behind you! I haven't been there in 20yrs. I'll have to stop back in for old times sake.

went buy there today and the shop was all closed up. I called and the message on the answering machine says they will only be open on certain Saturdays.

I guess their customer service finally caught up with them... (hopefully it was that and not some kind of health issue).
This is one of those threads that you shake your head at.. two complete different takes on a shop. I would definately visit this place (if they were still open) just to make my own mind up.

I have to chime in here. There IS a God.

Those A-holes deserve everything they gave themselves. This is a happy day for gun owners everywhere.

Please patronize the few decent, honest dealers who remain in this state.[grin]

True. You can give a discount for paying cash, but you can't charge more for using a CC.

The AG web page is still active, if that means anything. Possibly a temp closure.

I bought a gun there last March. It just never seemed like a place you could feel comfy in. I stll hate to see a shop close, even if it's only marginally customer friendly.

I'm sorry that you had bad experiences there. I took classes from George and Greg Danas, and bought guns from them and their father, who was quite a gentleman. George was a true 2nd Amendment activist, and it was a tragedy that he died so young.

Back when i was about 16, my mother needed to get her CCW permit for a job she was doing. She took the class for her LTC A at this gun store. she brought me along often because ever since i was very young i had had an interest in the military and naturally firearms. After taking the class she was looking to buy a handgun, i had been in the shop several times with her and for the most part i felt the owners should know by now i was very respectful and wasnt there to cause any problems. My mother didnt really know anything about guns so she naturally had to ask alot of questions about buying her first gun. The Fat guy behind the counter was pretty rude to her, making comments which made us feel like we were beneith him, and couldnt possibly be expected to make the right choice in a firearm. Finally we settled on a pistol, and we left.
Strike 1

We took the pistol to the range later that week. both of us shot, and we found the pistol fired to the left about 4 inches off the center of the target, we brought the gun back for a sight adjustment. The fat man was reluctant to beleive us, but accepted the job. We picked up the pistol later and fired at the range again. and HOLY CRAP, we couldnt even hit paper because the weapon was shooting so far to the right!. i looked at the front sight post to see that the smartass had moved the sight so far over to the right, that it the right edge of the sight base was actually hanging off the pistol!
Strike 2

Finally about a month or two after all of this, a friend of mine mentioned he needed a gift for a family member who was very interested in firearms, i told him i knew a gunstore where he could get a gift certificate since he didnt have any sort of liscence to buy anything from the store. so we drove to the store. knowing a bunch of random young adults/teenagers showing up at a gun store could be somewhat taboo, made sure to go to the fat man behind the counter, introduce myself in a polite mannner, ask if he remembered my mother and state that my friend wanted to buy a gift certificate as a gift. he was pretty dismissive and unfriendly. Being that it was winter i was wearing my winter coat, which happened to be a duster. The fat man called me over and told me in a diffrence choice of words, that i was dressed like a hoodlem, and that if i had any funny ideas he was prepared to deal with me, he then displayed the pistol which he carried on his person and told me in so many words, not to try anything funny.
Strike Three!

while i realize young adults can be a nusence in a gun store, The owner knew me from many visets with my guardian, i had politly stated my buisness, and had every intention of providing him buisness during the viset by proxy of the over 21 year old person who wanted the gift certificate, he had NO reason for the boarderline threat, or the rude treatment of my mother or myself.

Jokes on him, im now a Lieutenant with the US Army, and you can bet your ass I take my 0-1 pay to the four seasons. if he is out of buisness, the only reason i am disapointed is because i dont have the opritunity to calculate the amount of money he would have made in sales with me to rub it in his face.

I would gladly pay more to go to a good store, then pay a little less and deal with those idiots anyday, and you can also bet that every person in my platoon knows never to go there.

I guess that you dealt with Dennis. He wasn't one of the Danas's, but they did hire him. I never had trouble with him, but he certainly was different. As much as I like Four Seasons (and Carl Ingrao is good people), they also have a crusty old guy who is a pain in the backside.

I'm sorry for your experiences at AG Guns. I liked all of the Danas's. They were good people.

Does anyone remember about 20 years ago this shop had its guns displayed in a deli case in the back of a convenience store? First time I walked in I thought I was in the wrong place? I did buy a gun from them then and they were not to nice to a twenty something kid going in there, even though my money was still green. I understand the bad comments because time must have not healed the rudeness of this shop.
