With the reduction in and realignment of my collection, I found myself without an Obendorf made Mauser...which was totally unacceptable. I went up to Manchester on Wednesday 11/25 to take a look at six possible candidates in the auction coming up after Thanksgiving. There were more than two dozen Mausers available...more at one auction that I'd ever seen before. There were four that I selected to take a "shot" at: a tired, repaired, but safety only mismatched S/42G with sling, muzzle cover and rod, a worn but matched byf43 with no hood, and an excellent byf44 with sling, hood, and rod. Lastly was a matched 1939 42, well faded. All four had great bores.
On the first day of the auction I was outbid on the S/42G at $1500. On the second day I won the byf43 against another bidder for $1200; the byf44 went for $900, and the 39/42 for $1000. I had planned to go to NH and pick it up this past Monday, but NH had become a "red" quarantine/non-travel state after Thanksgiving. So that Monday I called and arranged for it to be shipped.
So to give me something to do on this rainy day, I made up this post. I have the missing parts waiting...so hopefully it will arrive next week.
A matched piece deserves original parts: worn sight cover, L&F sling, frosch, keeper, and muzzle cover.
