I dryfire and play with the SIRT pistol a hell of a lot more than I get to the range and shoot. I wouldn't say that to a guy like your chief though... he's probably wet his pants if he thought you took out a gun outside of a range.
When I do get to the range, I only shoot about 100 rounds.... but I'm strange. The only time I really shoot more than that is taking classes, or training with the NES crew.
