Bank tellers

So I’m often at the bank cashing a large check to make payroll or to head to the lumberyard to pay the bill. Why must the tellers ask out loud , “large bills ok ?” Or count out the money on the counter for everyone to see ?? I’ve actually cleared my throat and motioned with my eyes to count out of sight. I always carry when I go in there but don’t want any unwanted attention ! I actually had an incident once where after cashing a check I noticed a couple dudes following me out to the parking lot, I was in a supermarket bank , I saw a state trooper parked in the lot and walked rite over to him !
I don't get that either. When I had to process money on illegals to document what they had on them, I would take them into another room and count the money, I'd write it down in front of them the amount, then have them hide it somewhere and take them back to the cell. I didn't want someone stealing their money, and at least if it did happen, I'd know how to find it on the one who stole.

Yes, it took me a little longer, but damn.

I was referring to the Dennis In MA. 2000 is chump change. I only really paid attention at 20-30k withdrawals. Even 10 was pay attention but not crazy. Some tellers were clearly nervous at the higher numbers. My normal tellers were very easy and low key.

2 grand won’t even buy the tar paper for the job anymore

I hear you, $2k is chump change and they count it in the machine. I was more mentioning the procedure I go through regularly (have done higher amounts but just under $10K, same procedure). Are tellers really counting $20K-$30K (or even $10K) by hand, out loud? Sheesh!

In fairness, I'm the one who mentioned I regularly take out $2K in cash, not the OP - I have never had an issue w/ the way they count or feeling unsafe.

I imagine OP is probably taking out significantly more and perhaps his branch isn't in the best of areas.

I think there is a contingent of NES who think that $2K on them is a lot of dough AND are worried some jack hole at a bank is gonna rob them.

(cough)humblebrag. LOL

I forgot the machines. Yeah, the last few times I got $, they used a machine. Well, sometimes. I usually called ahead to be sure they had enough cash. Sometimes teh machine would have it in it and spit it out like an ATM for hte teller. The GOOD tellers would then take it to the counting machine behind them and double-check the count. But not hand-counting.

That was pre-Covid. I used to pay bonuses in cash. Then I changed it up a bit, my oldest (and most-cash-loving) retired AND Covid shut my local branch down. Hell, my local branch is STILL closed, IIRC down to appt-only. World's most paranoid bank. I guess they don't want business. LOL

Where I work people have been robbed for a pack of smokes. 2 grand is a lottery score for them. Perfect example, did anyone here see the Robbery/ murder video on tucker Carlson last nite ? Everyone here who’s chimed in on this topic today should watch it and then rethink your posts. Seriously Fkn watch it ! We don’t live in a polite society anymore. Dosnt matter what bank OR neighborhood you live in anymore , people are starting to suck more everyday. I’m deff not a pussy, I’m just aware of my surroundings. Watch the video. It’s everyday now

Not sure about anyone else, but 2K is a lot of money to carry around, at least for me. I thought always having a couple hundred in cash on me was a lot. I know in the big scheme a couple grand isn't a lot of money, but losing that much to someone ripping me off is a lot to lose.

My bank has the machine at each teller that gives them the cash, then they will recount it. But their counter/desk is lower than the one you are standing at, so generally only the person at the window can see what they are doing.

I deposited a check from a job today and also cashed a check written out to me for winning a match.
The teller counted it out "Ten and five makes 15". I whispered "Shhhhhhhhh........ you trying to get me killed?". Thank God I was carrying my rifle at patrol-ready and had my backup piece on my ankle. My body armor and helmet make tac-rolls difficult, but I did two on the way out the door just in case.

True story.

Well, the cashing a check for $15 was true. But the other stuff could really happen.

It's a lot to carry around regularly but it's not a lot in terms of going to a bank and making a cash withdrawal. I go monthly and pick up around $2k for a specific purpose but I don't carry it on me for very long. Aside from that transaction, I never have cash on me... I'm one of the cashless pay everything on my card & get cash back guys, lol. I'm considering changing my barber because he only accepts cash and I always need to stop at the ATM before going (he also moved his shop so it's a 15 min drive in a direction I never go versus being in the same building).

Carry all the cash you want. I'm a cash guy and carry it for whatever I can buy with it. You won't get robbed unless you flash it because in today's world "nobody carries cash". All plastic and paper. The YBMs will only want your sneakers, and that's why you CCW. Jack.

Last fall I was at a local supermarket bank withdrawing a little cash for a Craigslist purchase. While I was pulling into the parking lot, I noticed an exotic car (lambo, perhaps) also pulling in. While standing in line for the next teller, I noticed 2 "kids" withdrawing a huge amount of cash. They were making quite the scene. One kid was filming and making hand gestures while the other kid was withdrawing the money. 3 stacks of bills, so $30k? Put 2+2 together and figured they belonged to the exotic car. If I was a criminal, it would have been the easiest 30k in my life. Probably daddies money anyways, and I'm guessing the money was gone by the end of the day.

And your wife’s name on the account 😂
That opens up a while new realm of shit show. My wife couldn’t say to one of our closest friends “hey, I saw your parents today and the branch”. The average teller was not able to give me a balance (even though they always ask) because my wife was an employee. Manager only or above had that access.
In fact if your wife was in 5 minutes before you arrived they were not allowed to say they just saw your husband or even you kid.

Next time the teller is counting out your cash, look above their head. The Eye In The Sky never blinks and trusts NO ONE...

Just like in the Casinos...

Don't you count it on the counter after they give it to you? Go to a different bank that's not in the supermarket.

You know you're in trouble when they put your money through that loud super fast counting machine before they hand it to you. All the eyes behind you get real big 😂
Ah yes, the good old A-10 Count-O-Matic; the one that goes BRRRT.

The like business just fine;
it's the withdrawals they hate.

Give your guys a check.
Pay the lumber yard with a CC and collect points.

You are welcome, I solved all your problems.

Groups of immigrant youths on bikes outside Target, Lowes, etc., where I’m staying in Kingston, NY this weekend. I got the hard look walking out of Target with a sack of groceries from two youths on bikes by the front door and glared right back at them. It was a lone walk around the corner of the building and up some steps to the nearby hotel. MA/NY/NJ this trip - all I have is my folding knife…

Yup. Always put a hard eyeball on anybody who doesn't seem to be your everyday innocent bystander. It shows you are aware of those around you. Predators will prey on the oblivious.

There's a fine line. Being oblivious or timid will get you on their go list, but a glare or too long a look will often get you on it for a different reason.

How would you suggest it should be done?

They count it in your view so you can count along with them. Maybe they have a private office they could count it in.

I'm thinking maybe they could count it on their side, then hand it to you and say "please verify before you leave the counter area" or something like that. They could also ask "how would you like the bills?" and you could write it down on a slip of paper for them. I always give them a post-it with the breakdown of denominations.

The way they do it now is because people suck. You know a bunch of a-holes have taken the money and then come back in 5 minutes later claiming they were shorted. Then some poor low wage teller has to have that crap hanging over their heads for the rest of the day.

I understand why they do it, but the manner could use some improvement.

That's why I carry 24/7 and have been trained extensively how to react! Had two instances where I was glad I do! Thank the Good Lord I didn't need to take anyone down but they changed their mind real quick!! Probably saved some other folks from bad day except for the scumbags! I no longer let my wife to go shopping alone as she is handicapped and a prime target for the lowlifes. They prowl the parking lots looking for victims. Have seen it firsthand even in out here in the suburbs! My wife also carries but don't think she would be able to react quick enough nor has it in her big heart to take someone out. My daughter in law is in the banking industry and has her LTC but is not allowed to carry while on the job. Her bank was robbed twice. Back in the day I remember all banks had security guard on duty but not woke today!

Security went out of banks in the 90s. Mom worked at a bank for 20 years before changing careers. It was a cost to benefit issue along with having a known target in the bank. Robbers come in there capping the guard, or taking them out first. They would prefer to not spend the money on a guard, have the thieves do the note thing and file an insurance claim.

The FBI did a study years ago. Analyzed hundreds of bank robberies, interviewed convicted robbers, and came up with a list of things that banks could do to make themselves harder to rob. The banks had no interest. Easier and cheaper for them to just file a claim

Because the safety of our employees is our number one priority - yeah…

”On June 26, 2020, at approximately 9:45 a.m., Bah entered a Texas Regional Bank on Sunshine Strip in Harlingen and made his way to a bank teller. Within five seconds, Bah pulled a pistol from a bag and shot the teller in the head. Bah then robbed the bank and fled the area with the stolen money.”

I told my wife many times it’s not your money. Not your problem if they take it all. WGAF about the banks money.
Her branch was robbed a few years back. A coworker of hers was playing solitaire at the time of a robbery and the hand was in full display during the review of the robbery.
That was the end of computer games.
