Costco Manager Shows Just How Ridiculous New Seattle Sugar Tax Is

yikes. first of all I would never live in that state let alone that city. But if I did I would be doing all my shopping outside of the city. But it is good to see that this liberal stupidity isn't going to get a free pass. My guess is most of the sheep in seattle will comply...lol

Let the bootlegging and out of city purchasing begin. Seattle loves taxes. First it taxed ammo and guns ($0.05/round and $25 per firearm) and now this at a whopping $1.75/fluid ounce to pay for a bullshit entitlement program. This is socialism hard at work

That's exactly how it went down in Chicago. Sounds like people are moving a majority of their shopping out of the city because once you're out there for your soda, you might as well get everything else.

Did no one notice??????

$400K to give out vouchers for Fresh Crap You Won't Eat voucher program.

$1.5M to run the program.

They'd be better off driving around town with bags full of money on top of their car once a month. Typical Government logic. "We need 80c on every dollar to run the program." WHAT?!?!?!?!?!? Only the United Way can get away with crap like that.

Well now. Its only fair to use the sugar tax to subsize the cost of eating healthy.
Vouchers for broccoli and Brussels sprouts. Get in line, they will go quick.
Life in the bubble.

So does this tax apply if I bought, say, a Jack and Coke from a bar?

Supposedly the tax is collected by the distributor, who would then pass it along to the bar when they buy their pre- or post-mix. Since it would only amount to a few cents in the amount of Coke in a Jack and Coke, the bar may or may not bother marking up for it.

Gotta love:

The tax is not collected by the retailer nor is the tax burden intended to fall onto the consumer.

What about diet soda and energy drinks? They are "sweetened" but it's not sugar and has no calories.

o_O LOLZ

People here laughing at this should also realize the government spends billions subsidizing the corn industry to make sweeteners cheap enough that people can buy soda in bulk and destroy their health with obesity and diabetes. So this is a tax to counteract the other tax which makes sugar cheaper. Makes a lot of sense ! not..

Soda is already a stupid tax. You pay it with your health. Then we all pitch in paying for fatties healthcare. Obesity is the cornerstone of all modern medical ailments. Consumption of soda and vegetables won't change but I bet the eat the food we want you to program will soon cost more than the soda tax delivers.

10.5c per J&C.

Yep. Corn subsidies were almost eliminated. But my friend (guffaw at this point) Joni Ernst likes Big Corn despite being a small-government Senator.

We need corn subsidies.
We need ethanol mandates.
We need to give money to farmers (read: big corporations and co-ops) so they can pay lobbyists to woo senators to keep giving money to farmers. See my car/bag-of-money idea above.

Let this sink in: 2L bottle of soda = 67.63fl. oz. x $1.75tax/fl. oz. = $118.35 ! Is this even real?
I thought it said 1.75 cents/oz.

If this trends starts to spread, what's to stop manufacturers from producing sugar free soda and including a packet of sugar attached to the bottle? Like the yogurt with the separate fruit you mix in.

Thats still $1.18 additional tax on the bottle, how much does a 2L even cost these days? That's pretty steep.
I see the sign at the Walgreens down the street from me sometimes advertising $0.99/2liter of Coke, so at that price more than half of the total cost would be tax.
