Good day to hit the Range

300 meter day today. Wife wanted to practice a closer distance with the 6.5 creedmor since it's been a few months. Damn she is good with that gun. In addition to shooting prone, we practiced sitting and resting the rifle on trekking poles. I say we are fine out to 200 yards. 300 or more just not there yet. At least not when you add the stress of trying to make a legal shot on an animal.

Success with reloads for her gun as well. Shooting the same as her hunting rounds. That is a serious money saver right there.

Hope to hit some public land this week so we can practice shooting extreme angles, bracing against rocks, etc.

I deleted the built in lock from the 642 and brought it back to the range for more rounds. Finally getting a bit more of a feel for the trigger. There's a long double action, but right before it breaks, it feels like there's a bit of a plateau. And if I worked that plateau a little, I could get more accurate headshots, as seen below.

Next time move over three inches 😄

Damn fine shooting there. I'm assuming you were more than six feet away. Bahahaha

Went yesterday to do some pistol test firing. Beautiful day out!
Had some Wilson 10 rd .45 acp mags that were causing me grief. I adjusted the feed rails and filed out the burrs. Cleaned and lubed with silicon.
No issues now after 100 rds$. Yay!

Had a new wilson rear battle sight installed in my other .45 which had a dovetail but needed a full novak cut.
Lou at business end customs did a perfect job! I need to order a taller front sight to match. Shes shooting 2.5" high at 33 ft with a .175. Im going go back and check at 75 ft first but looks like I need a .200 or .210 either wilson or dawson.

Also put 100 rds thru my new Prodigy Comp DS 1911 9mm.
No failures. Nice and smooth to shoot. Trigger is horrid. Ejection is lazy but works. Slide hangs up on the disco.
New EGW ignition parts already ordered. I knew it would be a bit of a project. A poor mans Staccato but overall Im very happy I jumped on it!

Yeah that long double action has me over-squeezing the trigger a bit at the end. I put the target out maybe 10 to 15 feet. One day I'll bring a laser to the range and figure out what the actual distances are.

Had a match Saturday, went to the range early to get some rounds through my .22 Taurus. Got there literally in the dark, set my truck up facing into the pits, put the highbeams and foglights on and burnt through about 400 rounds before anyone else showed up.

Did a bunch of mag dumps, just breaking it in, and a lot of sets of four or five from a low ready, going for "good enough for steel challenge". It's a nice handling gun.

Match was IDPA format, I shot my Gen 4 G34 in it. I've been working on my reloads after reading an article in the USPSA monthly written by Rob Epifania. It's changed the way I do reloads, and I'm getting better. Read the article yourself for full context, but the key takeaway for me was to determine where my magazine holding hand wants to go and bring the gun there, rather than bringing the magazine to the gun.

So much faster, so much less fumbling.

Got to see if it actually helped on two stages in particular. One stage had a single shooting position, two targets at 7 yards and 10 yards, initial mag loaded with six rounds. Five on the first target, reload, five on the second target. 6.94 seconds, down zero. Guy who took first in that stage ran it in 6.56 seconds.

Other stage had two boxes, approximately 15 feet apart, with four targets in front of them, maybe 20 feet(?) away. From box A, dump six rounds on target one, reload and move to box B, then (2) shots on each of the remaining targets. That reload was more difficult, because i was moving. 10.28 seconds, down zero.

Adam took first on that stage with 9.99, beating me by .38 seconds and mentioned to me that I set up badly, I wasted time starting my movement to the second box. He was right, I could feel it. That's something I've got to work on, my transition from static to movement is bad.

Another 400 meter day today with the rifles. 10 mph cross wind. Held about a foot to the left and had acceptable results. We even did some seated shots using our tripod. Not nearly as stable as prone but the shots would have been lethal.

If we go out tomorrow then I think we will set up a grid in the berm made up of shooting clays at 500 meters.

Back to the premium CCW pistola to work on trigger control. Staccato makes it seem easy. Uhh, except for that one (shoot him in the balls!). Five to the noggin' with the 642, now with some new Altamont grips. Better control, I think, roughly equal in comfort shooting, but definitely better feel in the hand. Mostly got the hang of the trigger on it now, so I won't be uneasy in carrying it.

Brought my Dad to the range for the first time ever. We talked about the four cardinal rules, indexing, loading, grip, stance, breath support and more!

Fired my LCP II Lite to start. Moved on to G19s. My Canik SFx. An AR22 which we trained him to shoot lefty due to unique eyesight challenges from around 10 yards out. We ended with the SKS at around 25 yards out! Fun time and he’s looking forward to going back soon. We’ll also get him signed up for an LTC course! A great success!!!

Another Mass resident about to be a gun owner. Well done!

Treasure these times. Dad was my shooting buddy for years. Every week we'd punch some holes in paper or go scour the shops for deals. I still wear his favorite hat every time I hit the range.

Thank you, good sir.

I also converted my Uncle but he’s in NJ. My Uncle also needs to be more driven and train/get to the range but I gave him a cable lock last XMas for him to safely store his pistol so I consider that a small win even though he still hasn’t bought any ammo. The distance makes it harder to be a constant source of encouragement to check off various goals.

Totally, man! He had a great time and can’t wait to go back and learn more.

Let's see how we did this week (all shots at ~6.2 yds):

Looks like for the headshots, I had not enough finger in nose and too little cryptocurrency with one shot of too little character. For the center mass shots, too much slap bass, definitely thetans and undescended testicle with one wheel alignment. Advanced Pistol Shooting Diagnostic Target (Revised 2021 Ed.)
