Long range rifle choices.

Just so I have this right; you can pretty much hold X-ring at 600 with a scoped M1, from a sling-supported prone position? So factoring in a few not-so-perfect shots/missed wind call, you routinely clean the 600yd target?

I've got to tell you, that is some World-Class shooting.

Yea sounds like the NRA elite Distinguished rifleman class could learn something from a guy that can clean a 600 yd target with a scoped battle rifle well know for poor accuracy and shooting challenging sling prone.

Not sling held, off sandbags. They are very accurate with right ammo, good stock fit and barrel. Been shooting and collecting them for over 25 years. As said sold the 2 I used to own and shot regularly. Haven't been able to put restored one to stretch legs further than 100 yards yet.

Nailing a gong set at around 300 yards free hand

Not all m1s are great shooters. Currently have 2 tack drivers and 4 usable ones.

no shit, good shooting, what else to say. why not.

Now for a scope.
you do want there something crisp and heavy. more weight is only better for that rig, so look at scopes with 56mm min.
i would probably go with athlon ares if would choosing right now, or with a razor, as you cannot go wrong there, and europoptic has razors at a discount from time to time.
but, with modern glass, almost any scope in a $1.5K+ segment is pretty good. look more at reticles and make sure you like all about it before you commit.

next but not least - get a good brass now and if you do not have powder yet, R16 is now more expensive than h4350, and the latter is generally considered to be a better choice.
my bergara eats r16 same good as h4350, though, i never established any preference one to another and when i stocked up with powder - r16 was cheaper and easier to find than h4350, but then it all got reversed.

for brass - do NOT buy mixed brass deals, try to find primed alpha munitions, as it was the most consistent one i tried weight wise and it matters.

valley has it now and if you do not have it, i would not wait, as note the BS price on R16. it is NOT getting cheaper.

Two schools of thought.
Tweaked Rem 700 in 308
Shiloh Sharps 1874 in 45-70
The Shiloh shoots further.
Plus, with the MVA scope, it's so much more elegant.
An added bonus is the Flame Smoke and Stink from BP.
If you've never held or fired a Shiloh product you should.
Someday you'll be dead and won't be able to shoot cool rifles anymore.
f*** all the imitations from whatever place is cheapest.
It'd completely change your mind about modern rifles in whatever caliper you have a chubby about this week
Instant gratification doesn't apply to Shiloh Sharps.

One of the all time best shooters is from Mass and currently a full time employee of the CMP. He had the highest M1D score in Vintage Sniper at Camp Perry Nationals this summer. He shot a 97-4 in the 600 yard stage and 99-4 in the 300 yard stage. This is off sandbags. Top score with a USMC 1941 clone bolt action had 99-4 in the 600 yard stage, 100-8 in the 300 yard stage. A F-class or PRS rifle in 6mm whatever could probably hold that X-ring, but would be incredibly difficult with a M1D or C. I won't say impossible.
