M1A opinons.

Personally, I think the rifle should be the way the Good Lord intended it......

+1 here..

No offense to all of the "new and improved" fans. But, I opted for the plain jane service grade m1a. No loaded anything. With walnut (this is the reason God gave us trees, right?).

The gun only gets better with time. It shoots better than I ever will be able to (open sites). Will eat anything you feed it. As it does not have all the super tollerances of most of the match grade stuff, it has a longer life span before parts need to be replaced.

Just a different take on it..

Keep in mind a NM M1A won't outshoot a float barreled AR. I have a standard M14 rifle setup. I figured the extra cash for a NM bedded etc wasn't really worth it for the accuracy you get. Unless you plan on doing M14 competitions, then it makes sense.

I cut the stock right down to the rear sling swivel

That makes the LOP around 10" ~ 11"? (depending on the size of the pad)

My unmodified stock has a LOP of 13.5 inches.

I think I'm going to have it shortened to 12.5 inches.

Do you have any info (links / pictures) of the kydex riser? I need the comb height to be increased (~ 0.25") for the same reason you mentioned.

There are two versions. This one has knobs and a straight slot that make it quick-adjustable to any adjustment. That's the one I have and the one in the picture.

There is another version that is not as adjustable. The slots are grooved, not straight, and instead of knobs, the bolts are flush mount but need allen keys.

I thought the quick adjust would be a better idea... (you can't use the iron sights way up there) until it quick adjusted itself while I was shooting! I'd probably get the grooved ones if I did it again and just set it and leave it.

It takes about $3000 to $4000 to build an M1A that will hang with $1200 National Match AR15s in NRA or CMP highpower competition. And that's just the entry fee. ARs need basically zero maintenance to maintain accuracy until the barrel is done. M1As need to be constantly checked to make sure nothing is working loose and that the bedding is still OK. Double lugging the receiver and pillar bedding it makes the latter less of a concern.

There is only one M14 specific match that I know of, it happens once a year during the NRA National Rifle Championships, and it is a new match with no assurance of longevity so building a rifle just for it is silly.

I have an AR built and 3 more in progress. I want an M1A for the sake of having an M1A. I appreciate the opinions though.

I LOVE my SOCOM, it's a ton of fun to shoot and (knock on wood) I have had zero issues with it. It's one of those guns that people love to bash on the internet, but when you have it at the range everyone can't wait to shoot it.

With that said, when/if I ever finish up grad school, I'm going to pick up a FA, they are just so nice. http://www.fulton-armory.com/
