Massachusetts Rifle Association - Woburn, MA

Anyone know how difficult the test is ? I hate tests but am all about being safe/responsible. Anyone have any tips on the test ?

Some of it is commonsense stuff that everybody should know and you probably do already. The rest of it is stuff that you need to know about the restrictions on specific MRA ranges. It's still not rocket science, but give the rules a hard read.

I appreciate what they're trying to do. You might look at stuff like Fazio being std. velocity 22 rimfire and airguns only (that's the upstairs 50' range that gets used mostly by the serious target weenies) and think "how hard is that", but a while back somebody went up there with a .17hmr rifle, said "hey, it's rimfire, must be OK", and damn near shot through the backstop and the wall!

It's an easy test as long as you read the booklet. Remember the rule, when in doubt don't do it, thats one of the questions. There are range rule questions so read those over.

my dad is a member here. We went down two days ago. Good times. That was the second time I had been there. I didn't get a chance to see the outdoor ranges, but I really like the facilities and everyone who was in there was very friendly.

I used to be a member there... let my membership expire and don't feel like going through the ordeal to join again. I wish it were easier. I only went late night when I had time. I don't have the time to spend just joining.

That is how it was explained to me. I had to wait for a special meeting, ask someone to sponsor me, take a test and then they would vote. All this would take a few months. And I'm someone who used to pay so I could shoot maybe 10 times a year. I guess they don't need money?

Do you really have to go through the entire membership process to re-join?

Wait, what? MRA membership needs a sponsor now? (This is Mass Rifle, in Woburn, right? Not Woburn Sportsmen's, which is for whatever weird reason in Bedford.)

Is this range public aka can i go and shoot and just pay a few bucks to use trap?

While not a public range you can come and shoot Trap (Wed) or Clays (Sun AM @10) if you like with out being a member. The shot has to be purchased at the club as only steel shot is allowed. The rest of the ranges would be off limits to you unless accompanied by a member.

Price per round is 10$ which includes clays and shot.

MRA BOD MEETING FEB 1ST, 6:30 PM

Description:
Massachusetts Rifle Association Board of Directors meeting on February 1st at 6:30 PM
Date: Monday, February 1, 2010
Time: 6:30pm
All MRA members are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

Thanks Massman,

For all of the Mass Rifle members or those who are interested and who don't already know about it, there's a way to sign up for notifications regarding matches, range closings and even meeting so that they go right to your in box like the ones from Four Seasons.

All you have to do is go onto the MRA website: www.MassRifle.com and go to the left-hand side and click on "E-Blast Registration". It only takes a few seconds to enter your name and e-mail address and then you're all set. It's easier than having to search the web for what's going on.

Heading down there tonight to take the safety orientation...

I will probably keep my MVGC membership since I can practice shooting from the draw there.

I was interested in joining MRA but I had a questions that maybe someone here might know...

1) On their site, they say the Membership year is from Jan 1st through Dec 31st, however on their Application, it says October 1st through Sept 30th? That being said, If I apply now, are the dues prorated?

Any FYI or heads up from current members would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Both of those are right, sort of. I don't completely get it, but while there's some official membership year that ends at the end of September, in reality you continue to have access through the end of the calendar year, and the dues for the new year are due by the end of the calendar year.

It is pro-rated, but it doesn't make it any cheaper. At least when I joined, I paid initiation, plus a full year's dues for next year, plus the pro-rated dues for the current year. On the bright side, the pro-rated dues were a very good deal; I want to say I joined in April and only paid an extra $40 for April through December. (I did however join a while back before the latest round of changes; in any case, call or visit for the straight dope.)

Thanks amb .. Much appreciated. I tried calling yet didn't realize the limited office time, I'll ring over there on Sunday. Do you happen to know the typical timeline for the tests, interviews with committee then board?

Orientation video and tests are all done at once. Maaaaybe doable the same day as you do paperwork if you're there early, but more likely to be scheduled for a future Wednesday/Sunday. After that there's just one interview with the membership committee which is something like the last Wednesday of the month. (They got rid of the BoD interview step; they didn't used to interview at all, but were having some serious growing pains a couple of years ago.)

There are some MRA board members around here as well; I'm sorta surprised they haven't commented already, but if the above is wrong I imagine they'll set us both straight.

Note that (this is badly advertised, and I think because of that unnecessarily POs some people who feel like they've been blindsided) you start with access to only one of the three outdoor ranges. (Pope, which is the 50' pistol and smallbore range.) The 50yd range (McLaughlin) and then the 100/200yd range (Summa) need to be qualified for separately, and unless there's a current member who can make a convincing case for you you can't schedule those qualifiers until after six months of membership.

I'm officially a MRA member as of 04/07. Got my test, interview & fob on the same day. The test was hard, but I nailed it. [wink]

I do it when I'm shooting late at night and I'm the only one there. I'd suggest wearing a mask when doing it, it kicks up a ton of dust.

Welcome to the club.
