Hey, just wanted to help anyone who hasn’t taken a look at the Veteran benefits MA had recently made updates to in August.

What I found out was I have a $400 property tax exemption (and my town voted to double the exemption for veterans so it is now $800). This is simply bringing a VA Letter to the town clerk and I think one other item and they take care of it that day.

There are also updates to education- all state schools are free for continued education (certificate programs, bachelors, associates, etc…) in addition to your G.I. Bill, VR&E, etc…

I don’t work in the Mass Veterans office but just wanted to put the word out to check what other benefits you have available.

Woah, thanks. My town does the $800 exemption.

And for others reading this, there are additional degrees of exemption depending on service connected disabilities etc, and for surviving spouses in certain situations.

I've tried to get help from the va over the years and have been told several times that if it is not service connected they can't do anything for me.

Yeah, the VA never did crap for me until two years ago, the passage of the PACT Act and their sudden concern with the medical issues caused by Camp Lejeune water. I have to talk to VA oncology tomorrow to see if I have yet another new primary cancer to deal with.

PS. I'd rather have my health back.

Good luck.

🙏 all our best brother shitting hand to be dealt - not sure if you’ve used all available resources but if there are other available resources, I’ll post as soon as I can find them

I appreciate the information, but I'm in good shape, all things considered. At least the financial burden of all the medical care is lifted from our shoulders.

Yeah, cancer was definitely not the most fun I ever had. My only advice is go to Boston. It might be inconvenient but they have much greater resources.

My colo-rectal cancer was treated at Dana Farber 10 years ago. The VA has confirmed via genetic testing that it is not hereditary. Gee, no shit. There was NO cancer of any kind in my entire family tree until I went to that base.

Olak, have you used your town VSO?

They are good at working with you to properly get you a rating based off active duty time and presumptive disabilities.

I reached out to the VSO in Westboro to get information for some of the coworkers in my Veteran Resource Group.

Take a look at the map:

Sorry for delayed response, long past couple days here

I’ve been to the VA a couple times and when I left I’ve been extremely happy I have private insurance from my company so I don’t have to deal with that mess all the time.
Same I split based off what the need is. Like past couple days ER and surgeries, but for heart stuff I got private insurance and go to my doctor who doesn’t swap every 6 months

I've been happy with my VA experience. It was pretty easy to enroll and the people actually seem to appreciate what veterans did. I expected to get someone who was either just out of school, or not good enough to get a job elsewhere. That turned out not to be the case. I go to the one in Bedford and they're very efficient.
