Model 31 Barrel Modification?

Any idea what this modification is for on the barrel of a Remington Model 31?
There is a sling mount screwed into the buttstock, so maybe this is to attach the other end of the sling?

It obviously looks terrible, but any concerns as far as shooting the gun?

Good question. Are you thinking just replace the whole lug? That is a great idea.
I have no idea how it is on there though.

I just can't imagine it hurts the functionality

Just clean it up slowly remove the tool marks and make it look like it belongs. Once you do just use a little cold blue on it. It dosent look as though it will cause a problem with function.

Also, iirc that's factory. Why would it cause a problem?
