Hello, new to this forum and about to move to MA next month to start a new job in the Boston area. Coming up from Pennsylvania, I've got a handful of pretty sweet semi custom Larue and Geissele AR builds, both pistols and rifles. I know MA is one of the more stringent gun law states but jobs are hard to come by and this is really an offer I can't refuse. I know pistols are fine as long as they are designed to not take more than 10 round mags. Will need to turn in the over-10 round magazines to the local police for destruction. ARs must be registered, right? I asked the local police department and they said I would need to apply for a gun license right away and have a 60 day amnesty period where I won't be licensed yet. As for the ARs, the police said I would need to have a gunsmith convert them to permanent 10 round magazine that is not removeable [how do you even load the damn thing then... through the ejection port? wtf? OR sell it to an FFL within the 60 day amnesty period, OR relinquish the rifles to a MA police department so they can be destroyed. FFLs have offered and quoted me about 40% the value of the guns which leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Should I just leave them with a friend back in PA? Or sell at 60% loss to a MA dealer? Surrendering them to the local police seems like the worst option out of the three.

This isn't true. All conventional pistols are fine for you to possess, though I'm not sure what the rules are for AR or AK pistols (for example).

Don't do this. Also, don't take gun law advice from cops or gun stores.

Leave them in PA while you apply for your LTC. That's step 1.
You can figure out the rest later.
I thought there was a 60 day amnesty period? Cop said as long as I took the LTC class and submitted the LTC application within the first 60 days, even if I didn't get my card yet, it'll be fine I just can't transport any guns gotta leave them at home

Live in NH and drive into Boston, and keep everything.
OR
Send all that nasty non-MA compliant stuff to me, you can just drop the mags into a package. And if you're nice we can arainge some kind of visitation, maybe every other weekend.... I will want mag support payments [laugh]

GIVE NOTHING TO THE POLICE

Never take legal advice from a cop especially on gun laws. What town are you moving into? Has a lot to do with how easy it is to get LTC.

IMO, getting a place in NH, along with a cheap car, would have probably cost you LESS (per month) than renting a shithole in Quincy.

Unless the job is REALLY good, with an epic salary, I wouldn't give up my freedom to move into MA. Or any of the other commie states. One of the things I look at, for any new role, is what state they are in. IF it requires moving, I sure as hell won't go into a commie state for the position.

As for what to do with your existing guns. You could always get a small storage unit in NH, along with a safe, and store them there.

For reference, I grew up in MA. Left for FL around 85/86. Move back up in 97 (Jan 1) and lived there until 2012 when I escaped to NH. Which means I got out before the current batch of crap came into effect. NFW would I ever move into MA at this point.

I can see a 'boating accident' happening in the OP's near term future. ;)

I left Massachusetts 5 years ago, and law may have changed (likely for the worse). So take this for what it’s worth

1. MA law so complex that many police don’t understand it

2. Last I knew (when I moved to MA in 2003) the 60 day amnesty period DID NOT apply to assault weapons (ARs) I left my ARs behind till I had LTC in hand. There was no grace period for ARs

3. Best advice I got was from GOAL website. Had a section on moving into Massachusetts with firearms

Would you guys trust your guns in a public locker unit? Even if it was climate controlled and they have cameras and you double up with some Abus disc locks, still a bit uneasy about that. Might just leave em with a friend and hope he doesn't destroy them and burn through my uppers. It's only fair -- part of free indefinite storage with a buddy is he gets to shoot it whenever he wants.

Contact GOAL and ask for advice. They will respond.

The law is currently a clusterfcuk open to interpretation so whatever you hear here or (anywhere else) falls within the 100 shades of gray. If you get in trouble further down the road you should be able to demonstrate that you made an effort / inquiries to clarify the laws and abide by them. Hence calling GOAL or a 2A- friendly atty.

And given the location you have found your rental I would recommend against bringing your toys anyhow.

My advice? Get an LTC and obtain couple (compliant) pistols for home defense and calling it a day in MA.

There is not any job or amount of pay that could EVER entice me to move back to Massachusetts.

You must be sick in the head or just research lazy. There are well paying jobs everywhere around the country.....but you had to choose MA?
As a single guy in my late 20s with a job offer that would provide a comfortable living, despite the huge jump up in living expenses. I hear Boston is full of single educated fit ladies is it true? Time to look up some hot yoga spots as well.

Sounds good. The local cop I talked with recommended I get rid of all my 9s that hold more than 10 rounds anyway and just get a 45 that holds 10 max cause if you're only allowed to have 10 in a mag, why not it be a gun that was designed for it with the biggest bullet and stopping power? Cops need the extra rounds cause their jobs are dangerous but a civilian in home defense doesn't need more than 10 really ever.

If your main motivator is pus I wish you the best but warn you it may all be in vain.

This must be a troll account. Or you are incredibly naive for listening to that advice.

Not trolling. I've been a member of PAFOA for years now under a different handle. MA is just confusing as hell. Cops are allowed to lie I guess. And the whole thing about Glocks being illegal in MA is a lie too? I can't buy a new Glock from a gun shop in MA but they're.. *not* illegal by any means? What

You can bring in any pistols you want to. In fact, if you can ever imagine yourself wanting to buy a particular pistol you should do so now, before you move.

Boston is full of single, liberal womyn that will recoil at a dude who owns multiple ARs.
So MA law is your wingman in that regard.
