Taking my first trip to the local shop this week, and figured this would be a great place to ask some questions (newbie here!)

My buddy directed me to the MP15 Sport (CT legal) as a good first AR to get started on. Question is, if I buy the AR (dealer here says $675), and have a budget of about $1500, what should I walk out with on day 1? Accessories, safety equipment, etc. I also would considering the MP15ORC, or the MP15FT, if you guys think its worth buying a more expensive AR right away? I don't mind spending more up front rather than ending up back at the shop a year from now for something else. Obviously I'm not going to do any competitions or anything at this point, it's gonna be a process I'm sure to get skilled in the basics, so high end accessories aren't needed. Anything else you think I need to know before heading in to the shop let me know!

If you're talking $1500 for everything, stick with the sport for now and spend the rest on an optic, mags and ammo.

Ammo for an AR is easily underestimated by beginners who've never had a mag fed rifle. 1,000 rounds is $300-350 for brass and it helps to remember 1k rounds is only 33 mags worth. Not a lot if you plan on it not being a safe queen.

Ask me how I know [laugh]

I got the 15T and love it.

Spend the rest on ammo and some pre ban mags.

Mine fed with a steady diet of wolf steel case ammo I pick up for $240 per 1K rounds.

I own a Sport and a few other more expensive AR's.... I have come to admire the little cheap M&P 15 Sport very much, and the advice listed above is very good

IMO, if you have any friends that know a fair amount about ARs I would build a lower, then you have a good base to pick any of the hundreds of uppers available ranging from 400 to 2k plus

This day and age buying a complete rifle is more money than piecing and building one

If you can afford the 15T over the Sport, the difference in build quality and features is worth it IMO.
I saw them going for ~$1000 at CDNN.

It's the MP15FT in CT, and I believe they had that one in stock. Going tomorrow. How much are red dot for a decent one? Again, I'm a newbie, and the range I'll be heading to is max 100 yards outdoor. I know there are others, but thats all I need for now. What about ear and eye protection?

If you can find an aimpoint PRO that's probably the best quality/value out there for the money. Reasonably priced at $399, rugged, light-weight, long battery life, and comes with a mount.

I have a sport and love it. It's accurate, reliable, and very cost effective. I put a quad rail , tactical charging handle latch , and a Magpul CTR stock on mine and it looks awesome. Sure I'm $900 into it now but I wouldn't give it up for anything. It was my first firearm and it is a great choice if you don't already have a 10/22.

Don't go cheap on the optic. Any Aimpoint (not a clone) is a good choice if you like red dot, otherwise save up for a nice scope and plan on spending decent money. Say $200-400 plus a nice mount $50-200.

Remember you can move the mount and optic to any future AR, so IMO you're better off spending just as much on that as the rifle.

Personally I run a 1.5-5x scope on a LaRue mount. The mount costs almost as much as the scope, but I use BUIS (Troy), so I wanted a quick release that was dependable and repeated zero no matter how many times I take it on and off. I know I can buy any scope and use the same LaRue mount basically forever. Buy once, cry once.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Didn't get to the shop yet busy start to the week but will get there before the weekend. can't wait to get some range time in!

couple questions:

What are the CT requirements (law) or reccomendations for securing or storing an AR at home?

Finally considering I don't have my CCW yet, I will be subject to the 14 day background. Is there any info I should or shouldn't give? Like SSN etc?

No requirements for storing. Leave it where ever you want, whatever state you want.

It doesn't matter if you don't give SSN, they're going to get it when they do your background check anyway. Just write it down.

There is no registration in CT. This is not MA.

They (CT Department of Public Safety) give a confirmation number that is recorded in the book of the seller to confirm you passed the check. DPS does not know what gun or the serial number.

And again from what I read and what my buddy told me, when I take the AR home I need to be sure the ammo is locked in the glove box and the AR in the trunk correct? Same for going to the range right?

This is wrong. The gun just cannot be loaded (round chambered or mag in well). It can be left on your lap with the mag in you hand if you want to drive that way. Again this is not MA.

Neither the gun nor the ammo need to be locked.

This is the way it should be. I don't know of any incident where the driver was armed with an AR. [rolleyes]

If I drove by someone OC'ing an AR-15 I'd throw them a thumbs up! As long as it isn't an Olympic Arms. [rofl]

Is the MP15 ORC more advanced than the sport? does it have that forward assist etc that the sport is missing?

On a side note this being my first trip to the local shop I was shocked at how cool everyone was especially the other customers. Some offered advice on which AR, and one guy was just happy to see someone new getting his first AR. Unexpected but totally awesome. Is this typical or did I just run into a cool bunch today?

i just picked up a sport from a friend not to long ago. does anyone get trigger jobs for these? if so anyone you would recommend?

The trigger isn't that bad at all IMO and I have been told never to mod an AR trigger. You can buy a drop in kit but those will cost you. YMMV of course and I really don't have an issue with any of the M&P 15 triggers.

very true about the trigger. i like the stock trigger. im new to AR's and im feeling my way around to see. thanks for the info.

If you don't like the trigger and dont want to drop a huge amount just get a rock river 2 stage.

Or go crazy and get a Geissele. Best trigger period.
