Playing with guns at around 2:25 in the morning? Why was the kid up that late on a Sunday night?
LAKE GENEVA, Wisc. — The man charged in the deadly shooting of an 8-year-old Brookfield boy was playing with a handgun at the time to “look cool,” court documents allege.
Steven Merkel, 52, of Lake Geneva, was charged Thursday with reckless homicide and use of a dangerous weapon.
At around 2:25 a.m. Monday, Town of Geneva, Wisconsin officers were dispatched to the W3800 block of Lincoln Avenue, located in Lake Geneva, on the report of a young male who had been shot.
A responding officer found Merkel acting frantic and covered in blood, according to documents.
He directed the officer to Michael Meagher, 8, of Brookfield, who was suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck.Police spoke with Merkel after the shooting and he stated he “did something stupid,” documents state.
He told police he took the magazine out of the firearm and did not believe the gun would fire without a magazine in it.He allegedly pointed the gun at Meagher and expected it to click, but instead it fired,
