New Firearms Acquisition Thread - March 2023

A couple hand-me-downs from my father as his shooting days are pretty much behind him. A Colt Model M1917 and what I think is a S&W Model 17? Despite some pitting the S&W has decent blue on it. The Colt... well it looks like you'd expect a well used revolver over 100 years old to look like. Love 'em.

That S&W could very well be an Outdoorsman. If you want to PM me the serial number, I can look it up for you.

Couple buddies and I made a day of it yesterday. Hit a bunch of shops at the mill and I picked up this beaut. First CZ I've owned, reminds me alot of my Beretta in how it feels and the weight, love the all metal and can't wait to get it to the range. Hit Shooters Outpost after that and picked up some electronic ear protection, checked out the Sig compound in Epping (impressive) and then finished with Kittery. Headed back to my buddies and assembled his 6.5 creedmoor rifle.

Overall I'd say it was a good day.

Waaaaaaait, all metal?? What's the model #??

Finally got the last few pieces to assemble this beast, so technically “acquired” today. MA compliant…. I know.. I wanted a challenge and admit it’s useless 😎. View attachment 728026

The barrel is completely exposed. Every millimeter of the shroud that would allow a handhold is milled off. The bolt flange on the shroud ends at the exact point the barrel nut does. There is no rule about exposing the barrel nut, it pertains to the barrel only.

I’ll post more pictures. But would love for someone to explain this to me. Especially the “reported” comment. @ware If I’ve done something incorrect, I’ll gladly correct it and or delete my original post.

The barrel is not completely exposed. The statute does not talk about a handhold. An operator with a c-clamp grip can use that shroud to prevent burns.

Really appreciate your insight. If I was to pin the magazine release and make it a fixed mag, does that allow me to leave the barrel shroud?

S&W Model 10 K Frame Snub Nose .38 . Pawn shop find. With Don Hume holster and Split 6 Speed loader pouch. Yes the bluing could be better but pawn shop revolvers are hundreds cheaper then gun broker or gun shows in my area of NC because Revolvers aren't cool. My guess is this was a sock drawer or EDC gun for a southern Grandpa. Its so smooth the trigger. A perfect in between a J frame and K Frame 4 inch gun.

Recently a guy started a thread on whether to get a mini 30 or an sks. It got me thinking about an sks I bought from southern Ohio gun some years back, stuck in a locked closet, and damn near forgot about it. That thread changed that and I said I need to clean that thing up. Still in the shipping box and covered in good old cosmoline, I set out and seeing what I’d gotten after all these years.

Overall the cosmoline wasn’t too bad. I remember buying this and thinking it would be like a previous sks I bought, a yugo , that had way more cosmoline on/in it. This Chinese variant wasn’t too bad. No letter six digit serial number. Iirc dates her to 1956

I can’t remember the guy from the aforementioned thread or I’d @ him… wonder if her got an sks or something else

And My dog stella was good cleaning company on a nice spring day.

It was @Lank

Nice job cleaning up! I love the early Chinese ones. Mine's similar, other than a mismatched dust cover and a whole lot of trench grafitti on the stock.

Picked up another New England Firearms Model SB1 12ga Pardner, 3" chamber, single shot shotgun at my local gunshop. No rust, still locks up tight , no wobble when open and the bore is clean and shiny. Nice gun for $150 out the door.
This one will be left as a long barrel, I had my other cut to 18.5 inches and the front bead re mounted for use with my Chiappa pistol/shotgun adapters.

Also got 150 Hornady swaged .490 lead balls still in 25 count packages for $2/pack. for my Hawken rifle.
2 1lb containers of H335 for 223/5.56 and 1lb of H110 for 44spl/mag and others.

Kid had a whole bunch of deceased dad's gun on consignment...most were unfired or very lightly used. Might go back and further eyeball a couple of them. I was considering a .410 shotgun but the ammo is getting ridiculous in price. I think I'll leave it for the avid squirrel hunters who already have an ammo stash.

Nice comforter Very nice comforter
P.S. not a real model 29 with that hole in the side. LOL
Cool looking replica though.
