I want to purchase a used sig 9mm (my first centerfire handgun). I've been looking at used sig pro guns because they are cheaper, however CDNN has used 228s for 400 (top end of my budget). I've seen previous sales for pros go under 400.

Here's my question:

I know that the p228 is on the list (as are most sigs). However, are ALL P228/SP2009/etc okay to buy here in MA... or is it just a special variant? And how do I tell if the ones at CDNN (or anywhere else for that matter) are MA compliant?

Thanks for helping me out. I had no idea finding a decent handgun that won't break my bank was going to be so hard!!

Oh, and if anyone that reads this has a MA compliant SIG 9mm that they're looking to unload for 400 or less... let me know!!

Keep in mind that, with the exception of the stupid so-called AW ban, all guns are OK to purchase and possess in Massachusetts (assuming you have the proper license). What both the published EOPS list of approved firearms and the AG's double secret invisible list of safe guns applies to is sales. If you find someone who's willing to sell you a particular firearm that's not per se illegal, it's OK for you to purchase it. They might end up in deep doo-doo, but you walk away clean. Just remember that with the exception of C&R firearms, CDNN and other out of state distributers can only ship handguns to a licensed dealer in Massachusetts, who would then be on the hook for complying with all the laws, regulations, rules, gotchas, etc., etc., etc. Most of them, however, are too paranoid to do even that thanks to our AG, Tom the Enforcer. That's true regardless of whether or not the gun is on the list or meets the AG's requirements.

In simple terms, if it's something you want and they're willing to sell it to you, buy it. The only downside to you is the flack you might take from your better half. And the fact that it's on the EOPS list or that you somehow got a notarized letter signed by the AG himself saying that it's legal probably won't carry the slightest bit of weight in their willingness to sell it to you.

I think (but not 100% positive) that Sig had to modify their guns to meet the MA requirements.

If so, ONLY the MA approved variant can be transferred by a MA dealer, and that would rule out ordering from CDNN (very, very unlikely to be MA variants that they are peddling).

Only exception is if the handgun (specific model number/designation) is on the EOPS List AND was made before 10/21/98 (it would be exempt from requirements) or if is was legally possessed IN MA on 10/21/98 (even if it wasn't on the EOPS List it would be exempt).

Also be aware that CDNN prices are wholesale to the FFLs, NOT Retail to the public. Thus if a gun is listed as $400 by CDNN, most dealers won't sell it to you for less than $450 (and probably more) so that they can pay their bills and stay in business.

Get the SN and call Sig. If it's an M version gun, its OK.
If it was made BEFORE the 98 date, it's ok (Becsaue it's on THE LIST)

I have a 229, but it's really a 229M, which means mass-complaint...

Sig customer service is TOP NOTCH, they'll help you out.

BTW, i dont think CDNN will ship ANYTHING to MASS.... If you find something you are 100% sure can have it sent to a RI/ NH FFL, then have them send off to a MA dealer. You might pay an extra 50 that way, but if it's going to save you money in the long run, who cares?

Thanks ...

Thanks for all the responses, this forum is extremely helpful!!

However, it's now become a moot point as I visited Four Seasons Guns yesterday and put a deposit down on a S&W 908. I'll finish the transaction next weekend when the 'tax holiday' is in effect (if I can wait that long!). I know it's not a lot of money to save, but I'll save enough to buy 50 rounds of decent 9mm ammo!

Edit:

COULDN'T WAIT THAT LONG!! I'm now the proud owner of a S&W 908.
