Was hunting in Rochester MA for an evening hunt. On the way out, it starts raining. It's cold. I get back to the truck and this cat is shivering in the parking lot next to my truck. I'm the only vehicle in the lot. Cat is very friendly, has a mark around it's neck where a collar used to be. I've been around cats all my life, and have owned many. This animal was very upset, confused, scared, cold, wet, and disoriented. But it looks like it hasn't missed any meals or hasn't been out there long. I pick it up and put it in the truck, fire up the heat to get it warmed up and call Rochester animal control. This is where it gets interesting.
The woman tells me she can't take a healthy cat and I need to leave it. I tell her it's obvious to me this animal was dumped and if I leave it, it will be coyote food by dawn. After some additional back and forth, she finally agrees to come out. When she gets to the lot, she opens my truck door, and it slowly walks out and then darts into the woods. She says "see it's on it's way home. Probably someone's barn cat" I respond "you don't know what you're talking about. There is nothing in that direction except thousands of acres of uninterrupted timber filled with coyote and fox. The only way it can get to any houses or "home" is to swim across the Mattapoisett River - in December. She said "thanks for calling", got in her truck and left. Okay - whatever you need to tell yourself so you can sleep at night...
I went home but this was bothering me the whole way. I know this animal was not a "barn cat" or some outside cat that just happened to be in the lot in this state. So I dropped off the weapon and went back. There it was in the lot again, shivering in the rain. It immediately ran over to me and back in the truck it went. So, I talked to the neighbor - literally the only house on the street. Never seen the cat before in his life. This time, I said f*** that twat waffle animal control officer in Rochester, and I brought it home.
I have a cat myself and I have no idea if this animal has anything. My cat also does not like other cats. So I had to set it up in my garage, which is the best I can do with what I have. I gave it food, water, and a litter box in the largest hotel pan I had and a fleece blanket. It will go to the Fairhaven Animal Shelter in the morning. Officer Terry - actually cares. I'm sure it will get into a good home. I know there is probably a process to try to find the original owners. I would wager the animal isn't chipped and no one comes forward. Even if she was an escapee, no way she winds up where I was hunting unless someone brought her there. Hopefully she goes to a loving home soon. She's such a sweetie.
