Was hunting in Rochester MA for an evening hunt. On the way out, it starts raining. It's cold. I get back to the truck and this cat is shivering in the parking lot next to my truck. I'm the only vehicle in the lot. Cat is very friendly, has a mark around it's neck where a collar used to be. I've been around cats all my life, and have owned many. This animal was very upset, confused, scared, cold, wet, and disoriented. But it looks like it hasn't missed any meals or hasn't been out there long. I pick it up and put it in the truck, fire up the heat to get it warmed up and call Rochester animal control. This is where it gets interesting.

The woman tells me she can't take a healthy cat and I need to leave it. I tell her it's obvious to me this animal was dumped and if I leave it, it will be coyote food by dawn. After some additional back and forth, she finally agrees to come out. When she gets to the lot, she opens my truck door, and it slowly walks out and then darts into the woods. She says "see it's on it's way home. Probably someone's barn cat" I respond "you don't know what you're talking about. There is nothing in that direction except thousands of acres of uninterrupted timber filled with coyote and fox. The only way it can get to any houses or "home" is to swim across the Mattapoisett River - in December. She said "thanks for calling", got in her truck and left. Okay - whatever you need to tell yourself so you can sleep at night...

I went home but this was bothering me the whole way. I know this animal was not a "barn cat" or some outside cat that just happened to be in the lot in this state. So I dropped off the weapon and went back. There it was in the lot again, shivering in the rain. It immediately ran over to me and back in the truck it went. So, I talked to the neighbor - literally the only house on the street. Never seen the cat before in his life. This time, I said f*** that twat waffle animal control officer in Rochester, and I brought it home.

I have a cat myself and I have no idea if this animal has anything. My cat also does not like other cats. So I had to set it up in my garage, which is the best I can do with what I have. I gave it food, water, and a litter box in the largest hotel pan I had and a fleece blanket. It will go to the Fairhaven Animal Shelter in the morning. Officer Terry - actually cares. I'm sure it will get into a good home. I know there is probably a process to try to find the original owners. I would wager the animal isn't chipped and no one comes forward. Even if she was an escapee, no way she winds up where I was hunting unless someone brought her there. Hopefully she goes to a loving home soon. She's such a sweetie.

You're a good man.

I give money and pet supplies to some dog rescues down south. Horrible situations for animals down there. Horrible. Entire litters of puppies dumped in the woods. Dogs dumped at shelters that are so overwhelmed that they can only keep them for a few days before they are put down so they can make room for more. Dogs found beaten, burned, shot

JFC, I hate people

PreBan Man - You Rock! It warms my heart to hear rescue stories like this. Yes, most people suck but you sir, do NOT.
As I write this, my 16 year old rescue pup is curled up asleep in one of his many beds. He was thrown away by his previous owners at 10 year old. When animal control returned him, they (she) said she didn't want him anymore.

I get sometimes people have to give up pets. Housing situations, financial, whatever. I don't judge if done the right way. Bring it to a shelter. It will get adopted.

Ehh...you hope it gets adopted. Not always the case though .

Rescued has different meanings i guess.

Sounds like you were hunting the Church property. Unfortunately that area is known for being a dumping ground for unwanted pets. Good on you for doing the right thing.
Yea I was on the Church's Homestead, which they now call the Mattapoisett River Wildlife Management Area..

Shelter opens in just over an hour here. I'll bring her in and talk to Terry. Hopefully he has the space. I'll call a few others if not, or maybe he can point me in the right direction. I went into the garage this AM and spent some time with it. Fed it again, etc. This cat is such a sweetheart... I'm trying not to get attached.... cats turn me into a softie pretty quickly....

If I can't get it into a shelter today, I don't know what to do. It can't stay in my garage again. Temps are gonna drop and it will be too cold... Basement maybe.

That is a heart warming story.
Glad you are in the Christmas spirit.
Made me tear up a bit.

Somebody will love to own and take care of that cat.

If my girl has her way, that would be us!!! Fortunately for me she is out of town right now so I don't have to listen to her chirp in my ear about how sweet and beautiful this cat is... Her heart is bigger than mine... If she were here this cat would be at the vet getting checked out and cleared to come into the home....

This is why I don't walk anywhere near the woods. Or anywhere for that matter.
I would end up alone, living with a thousand cats.

So I'm cleaning my Weber smoker one early Sunday summer morning.
When I hear a Meoow, Meow, Meoow, Meow, Meoow, Meow, Meoow, Meow loudly coming from the woods behind my house.
I'm like what the hell is this, kitty morse code. It was so fast and high pitched.
Inside my empty head I'm all excited like a two year old and thinking free kitty! Sweet!
Then a cat comes running out of the woods. I'm like come to Papa little kitten.
Only to realize in horror that I must have left the rear deck door open a bit the night before and that our cat Wolverine was out the entire night![smile]
He was so happy to see me. Poor scared fella.

And my dream of having a new kitten vanished into laughter as I told my wife to come out to the deck to see what I had been hearing.[rofl2]
