Dealing with the gen z.......I swear some days I just want to say f*** it and head to the woods and be a hermit.

Today I’m on a business trip with a gen Z and it’s getting close to dinner time. I’m driving and say there is a chain restaurant 2 miles from the hotel because it’s close and I’ve got to finish my presentation for tomorrow after. She says she wants to go to fancy pants restaurant 30 minutes away because it’s special. I say this will be a 2-3 hour deal and I’ve got to get some sleep too.

I’ve just finished my slides and getting ready for sleep for the 8 am meeting and I’m sure she hasn’t finished her appetizers yet. I’ve got to retire soon.

Im pissed im so late to a generation hate thread, these are my favorite.

Now that Im here, wheres my trophy?

First you have to join the party, comrade.

So... a thought occurs. We've had events on NES, most of them in the late 2000s to early 2010's that have given away T-shirts, commerative coins, etc. The only requirement was to show up, and maybe pay a small fee in regards to helping offset the costs of the event.

How is this our participation award different from a participation trophy? Is there anything really wrong with a gaudy fake gold trophy to commemorate a good time with friends and maybe teammates? A season of practices and games required more effort than our max 3 hour (Pittsfield to boston) commute with a get-together.

If you're driving, how did she get to the fancy restaurant????

And she went to a fancy restaurant. . . . BY HERSELF????? I'm sure with her nose stuck in her phone the entire time. What a waste. I'll eat stale Cheerios before going out if I'm alone. Going out is for socializing. Sheesh.

The difference is the meet ups weren't a competition. A commemorative token of some kind is different than handing out awards to everyone who competes in a competition, regardless of performance.

I think in larger, corporate settings, the hiring managers may not want to hire a young go-getter, as it would threaten their jobs in the future. Great sign of a dysfunctional organization.

Maybe. Though you have to look at what’s going to make your job easier in the long run. Hiring crap employees to keep you safe actually makes your job harder and more insecure.

I’ve been lucky in my hiring lineup. Most have been good hard workers. Two I’ve hired were just shit shows and I got rid of them. But the rest were good. He’ll one guy I hired years ago is now at a higher level the me.

At some point in your career you’ll end up reporting into someone younger than you. It just works that way unless you have the golden “C” in front of your name.

On the other hand, I've been in tech. organizations where the group responsible
for widget A and did a crap job of it was retained after the layoffs to fix the widget
design.

The team doing widget B which worked straight up got laid off.

Lol i remember we were hiring one time and i was interviewing a guy who was like 50

I was like I'll be your boss are you okay reporting to someone so much younger than you i was like 30 at the time. He was like no I would have a problem with that. So I ended the interview being like well ok ... and then he got mad lol.

Stupid people

Onetime I had an interview coming in to interview for an opening and I was walking between the buildings to get back to my office for my interview. As I was walking back to the main building a guy comes flying into the parking lot nearly hitting me in the process. He yelled at me to “get out of the way”.

15 minutes later, after filling out the application, he was brought down to my office for the interview. The expression on his face was priceless when he saw who was interviewing him. Needless to say, it was a short interview.😆
