Hey guys I took a Smith 627 in trade from a member on here, despite telling me he had the original hammer, the gun came only with a DAO hammer. I want to get regular hammer but am having a little trouble finding one. All the ones I see have the firing pin attached to the hammer. The 626 that I has an internal firing pin. Anyone have a line for where I can get one of the firing pinless hammers?
Also thinking about a new lighter power rib main spring, I did one in a another gun and got light primer strikes, would an extended firing pin assure I have reliable ignition?

Do you have a 626 or a 627? You mention both.

Do you mean a 686?

Extended firing pin? That sounds like a terrible idea. If you get light strikes after swapping the springs, an "extended firing pin" sure isn't the way to go.

The hammer you want is for a revolver with a "transfer bar" Smith usually will not sell them to anyone but a certified gunsmith. I agree with knfmn on the firing pin, a longer pin can puncture the primer cup, your issue is with too light a trigger.

Clearly not a revolver shooting bunch that's chimed in thus far. What kind of DAO hammer? If it's an APEX you can probably trade even it for a regular hammer. And extended FPs (along with reduced power FP springs) are a pretty common way of getting reliable ignition with the lightest possible trigger, but should probably be the last area addressed.

You can try Numrich, Brownells, Midway, etc... For a hammer. S&W spare parts stock has been pretty bad lately.

I've got a MIM N frame hammer lying around - any one would do for you. The difference will be the width / shape of the spur. I believe all the MIM hammers are for frame mounted firing pins.

DAO hammer=a spurless hammer. One that was manufactured that way, or has had the spur cut/filed off, so it can't be cocked easily with your thumb.

Right. But if OP has, for example, an Apex DAO hammer he would likely find someone willing to trade a factory hammer for it. A dremel hack job not so much.

I'm not sure of the brand but it's a manufactured hammer. I don't want to trade it, I'd really rather find a factory hammer and have both. I think the gun would is more of a competition piece I I want to tune it with springs thus the extended firing pin. Are all the N frame revolvers frame mounted firing pin'S
