Talk to me about 38 Super?

A friend of mine offered for me to buy a 1911 race gun in 38 Super that he’s looking to sell. It’s a nice gun but to be honest I know absolutely nothing about 38 Super. I don’t need a new caliber in the stable, but the gun definitely interests me

So what should I know about the caliber?

The brass is made of 23 year old Miss Universe hymen.

Supposedly the Texas Rangers liked 1911s in that caliber to stop fleeing vehicles back in the John Dillinger days. If you have an overwhelming desire to shoot a hole in someone's engine block, you better get that gun.

There are some reports of 1927 Thompsons chambered for .38 Super.

I think it was the 1928. Wasn't the 1927 a semi-auto?
