Taunton Rifle and Pistol Club

Christo - if you want to see the range, on Tuesday and Friday evenings between 7 and 9 there *will* be folks there who can show you around. Every Tuesday there is a match, every Friday there is a small social gathering; historically, at least one executive board member is present.

You *mail in* the application. Mail it to the PO Box, and it will reach the proper person. If you show up and try to hand it to someone, you don't have the same assurance.

If you put it on the berm and stake it with fishing line or something along that idea, but I think it would be frowned upon when it starts to leave the berm and/or cross into someones lane so to say.

Not allowed.

"Absolutely no shooting is permitted at any target on the ground or placed near or on top of any berm, post, or support other than target frames."

and

"Under no circumstances is any member to shoot at targets placed part way down range. All targets are to be placed directly in front of the impact berm and not higher than four (4) feet above the ground, and at least one (1) foot off the ground"

Off topic, but I was there today with my cousin. We shot our Glocks at the indoor range, and I made sure my duty weapon (S&W 4006) is actually functional [smile]... Did I say Hi to any of you guys? We sat in front of the TV in the lobby and probably spent 30 mins cleaning our guns and watching TV around 230pm. Man I love my club.

A guy I work with recommended Taunton to me... I've only been a member for about 6 months and I could not be more pleased with my decision to join. There are several clubs closer to my home, but joining them takes an act of congress and the clubs officers act like they are doing you a favor. Folks at the Taunton range are very friendly and helpful. Everyone I have met there has been great and happy to help out a newbie to the range. The facilities are terrific and I've never had to wait for an open booth on the range. Taunton is a great club.

its just a no brainer i just sent in my application i mean i did just join the afs in north attleboro its nice and i live a mile away, but there are just to many great things said about the taunton club u had to do my app hopefully ill get it back soon

If you shoot stuff at the outdoor range, pick up your junk!!!!! There was so much crap at the berm today. Damn slobs, show some respect for the club!!!!!

Agreed... We all don't always get every piece of brass or whatever but stapling your ammo boxes and leaving cups/empty bottles and cans all over the place is crazy I've used the range 3 days apart and it's been trashed in just a couple days!

I hate when people leave all kinds of junk all over the place. I usually try and bring a kitchen trash bag and fill it up while I'm there and toss it in my dumpster when I get home.

Do non members go to the outdoor range and shoot and trash it? I'm guessing it's not too hard for someone to drive in and use the range. What sort of security or checks are in place? Should we check shooters at the outdoor range for membership?

Avastan - the largest problem is that people bring 'stuff' to shoot, shoot it, then leave. Unfortunately, there is a large amount of debris and destroyed pallets / target holders which we're going to have to remove during the next work party. The next work party is Saturday, 14 September starting at 9AM. Show up, bring your friends.

You need an RFID card to get in... Unless you follow someone in.

Same here. The condition that people leave the outdoor ranges in is disgusting. I usually clean up as much garbage off the range/berm as I can when cleaning up. I don't understand why people think they can create a huge ****ing mess and go home. Im not your mother...

I keep meaning to purchase a dedicated broom and shovel for the outdoor range, if there is something to use it looks looks like it been down range a few times. [angry]

I did that. It was gone within 4 days.

I was just going to say - if you bring something new there, someone will either take it home with them or it will end up down range so some brodawg and his buddies can miss 150 times shooting at it with their tacticool AR

OK I finally got my LTC approved, now gotta apply to a club this one seems the best in my area, you guys said they check the apps 1st sun of the month, rite?

they read them at the monthly meeting. After that it takes a week or two for them to tell you that you got in (don't think anyone has ever not). Then you sign up for the next orientation meeting.... so about 2 months from the time you hand in your paperwork, give or take (sometimes it goes faster but no promises)

ok but the monthly meet is 1st sunday rite? I just wanna make sure I get the app in for the next meet

Went to orientation today, one one session, 9am. There was approximately 40 new members joining the club. Welcome to everyone I met today!

Overall it was a very good orientation. Good rule coverage, and get to know the club officers.

One item of note, nothing I can recall was said about the amount of TRASH on the ranges. When we arrived at the range by following each other, I noticed immediately the amount of refuse outside the firing positions. Old chairs, rusted items, etc. scattered around. Honestly, the range looks more like a neglected lot than an active range! Then there's down range, tons of splintered crap! They do have a dumpster onsite but mostly empty.

As I recall, not much was said about the debris on the ranges. It was talked about regarding shooting fruit, watermelons, etc. It was said to be sure to clean up all the food as it attracts unwanted pests (yellow jackets)

That outdoor range needs some TLC for sure, the firing positions as well are a bit worn down. Perhaps a coat of paint on the mosquito magnet's cage?

Thanks to the volunteers that ran the orientation, I appreciate your time and will enjoy being a member.

I said the exact same thing a month in and I was told come to the clean up days as I guess nobody ever shows for them. Further questions got no response.

There is a work party every month. At least once a month, the lead has to be removed from the collection trays at the East [13 position] indoor range. *

There are a hand full of members who show up for nearly every work party - if you've been to more than one, you know who the regulars are. It takes a tremendous amount of time and effort to keep the club operating.

It really *does* help tremendously any time members or guests can leave the facilities in better shape.

Avastan - welcome to the club. The pistol instructor and the chief safety officer do get a bit off track at times. Yes, shot up targets and other debris need to be cleaned up. As an aside, the chairs are there deliberately [as are several 30" long sections of tree trunk] so people can shoot off the benches more easily.

Tell you what - I'm going to be at the range tomorrow evening. Please give me a quick list of things you'd like addressed on the outdoor range. I will not paint the mosquito magnet cage, though.

*Full disclosure - I haven't been to a work party since June, was away on business. Back now.

First let me attempt to be clear. I'm not complaining, or asking for any one person to clean up the entire range. Im trying to bring awareness to the range and as a new member I would like to see it improve. I actually picked up a bunch of trash on Sunday before I left. As everyone knows, it's not a one person job. I think the mess feeds onto itself as members may think it's "okay" not to clean up and maybe even dump junk they don't want here, perhaps an old wooden door or something. I'm really hoping that WE can improve the club for everyone's enjoyment. It may help if I post the pictures I took on Sunday.

On the mosquito magnet cage, it's just an eyesore imo. Honestly the benefit of having the magnet outweighs the cosmetic issue of having a rusty cage. Although a bit of TLC would go a ways to improving the aesthetics of the range. I didn't take a picture, but I'm sure everyone has seen it. I'm also aware of the labor involved in sandblasting the cage, and applying paint ... not a small task.

As for the chairs, in review there was actually just one that was broken/ unusable that was standing out. The chair is along side a table that needs repair/replacement:

The silver colored chair on the right along with the damaged table seem unusable and just clutter.

As for the Ranges, here is the current state of targets left behind, debris, and other trash.

Despite Clear signs being posted throughout the range; trash, targets, casings, etc are a HUGE issue. People don't clean up!

Here are some quick pictures of trash, shotgun and casings throughout the range on the ground:

This spent casing are not a new problem as seen in the next photo:

A plus! Broom and shovel! Amazing, hopefully they stay.

Last words, I am very excited to be a member of the club and hope to help improve it!!

Question: Without sounding like a jerk, how do we ask our fellow members to clean up after shooting, 12ga, brass; when there is tons of casings at the range? Like I mentioned earlier, the mess seems to feed onto itself. It almost seems okay to not clean up. I personally will continue to pickup what I shoot and more. Although, it will no doubt bother me to see someone shoot and leave without cleaning up trash and casings! ugh!

Thank you.
