Vehicle Rust prevention/under coating suggestions?

Do you send your car off to a mechanic or diy?

General question or pertaining to this? Mostly I DIY but I got limits and two buddies with real shops :)... but this job, I called around, was like nobody local who does Boss Wax or Waxoyl wanted to return my call (late 22) and wanted this done soon & right, so bought the materials...

Our local retailer is Rovers North in VT. Called them, got a bunch of extra info & pointers, ordered my kit (gun, gallon of each product, some spray cans for testing & touch up). They do apply it there, but too far to be practical for me. Does require work spread over 3 days with the vehicle idle ideally, but isn't long hard days of work involved.

For those in metrowest area interested in waxoyl, I used Forte’s in Framingham on my new Jeep last year.

And before anyone says anything about my vehicle choice I’m straight, I hate rubber ducks and I have well over 1,000 miles off-road in 4-low climbing rocks in the last year.

We beat people up for owning a Jeep here but Yota gets a pass? Haha oh I hope not.

I drive a Colorado, need the bed, and I do quite a few 1000 mile trips where I might set the cruise at 82 for most of it and still get about 20 MPG that way - even on ATs or snow tires that are a little upsized, and it's smooth and comfortable for that sorta duty...

The cost of a Jeep really stings, but I want one still. Just where the Jeep shines isn't my use case anyway - off road I got an occasional mud run or a little this or that, to get here or there, a half mile, so I don't gotta walk. And although I wouldn't, these little pickups are rated for 7k towing and do amazing with a 3.5k trailer, kinda like it's not there. Even the ZR2 though, isn't a Jeep - especially if you go hard or are trying to customize them. Although you can set them up to race, and they definitely compete, I think the use case is mainly mall crawling.

I think the hot setup for little 4x4s in 2025 though had gotta be a Raptor Ranger w/ the V6 twin turbo. Still not a Jeep but is muscle car power in a little pickup, to GMs current offering of a turbo 4 that is neat but is only adequate, not inspiring. Same kinda $$ to get that Ranger or a ZR2, same idea behind both but the Ranger is powered a lot better.

The rubber duck thing is about as gay as the 4 cylinder in my Tacoma.....could be gayer......depending on how many are on your dashboard.

Any good shop recommendations in the
Woburn area? My 2003 Explorer is in desperate need!
Thank you.

So seems from the responses a few did the waxoyl with high success then the woolwax. Fluid film may be too thin of a viscosity to stick

Those are the usual suspects, don't forget nh oils boss wax either but it is not a DIY option.

All 3 of the above you can have to sample next week by ordering aerosol cans. Waxoyl it's 2 cans. Might be wise to see what you think before covering the truck in it. All aren't cheap, but it's all still useful if you own various outdoor equipment, a can of anti corrosion this or that.

One option that has been in Canada for a while, but is new in southern New England, is Krown rust protection. I had a minivan treated last year. Too soon to say how well it will work in the long run, of course. The folks at Krown of Leominster were organized, efficient, and genuinely friendly.

5 gallons PB Blaster Surface Shield with the appropriate oil sprayer, is much faster and save $$, than using the rattle cans.

Definitely a gun. A real one has attachments for fogging the frame and holds a bunch.

But to test stuff out, a rattle can is good.

AC Auto in Wakefield specializes in undercoating. They power wash with saltsgone and then coat with a combination of waxoyl, woolwax and fluidfilm depending on the area. Working on your car/truck sucks but it does a good job of protecting it.

What’s the price range on the professionally done services?

Nh oil was about 300ish. Been a few years so my number maybe off.

Im guestimating in that wheel house. I'll call the place in plympton that has the wool wax.

Edit:
Called Campbell's coating - to get rid of the rust be one process then to apply the wool wax. With prep, the derust processing and wool wax he guesstimated $1200.

This can at least give a baseline. I called O'Handleys in Taunton, elite auto detailing in plympton too.

I'm actually really impressed you have an 03 Exploder still on the road.
I have an 05 F-150 and I can literally sit and watch it rust away before my very eyes.

Only 26k miles!! I drove it out to Rochester NY
‘Roadsalt Central’ during wintertime years ago.

You gotta keep in mind, Boss Wax via nh oil - their better treatment, isn't $300. I want to say it's more like $1000.

Some treatments, spraying goop and done will be cheaper, others where they thoroughly clean and do a more meticulous multi phase job will be a lot more.

I’m getting my car done in a couple weeks. He quoted me about $600 for the Waxoyl or whatever it’s called. Car has only been on the road a month so an older vehicle would require more prep. I like the idea of this product over all the other shit mentioned here because it doesn’t smell, isn’t slimy and it’s one application for the life of the car.

They did suggest checking in every 2-3 years as rocks or anything scraping the bottom may require a touch up. Touch up cost is $80.

Which side of the state are you?
I'm gonna call o O'Handleys again.

Elite auto in plympton said approximately $300

Serious question. This is a firearms forum, so there is an obvious product. What advantage do these other products have over the Cosmoline products mentioned earlier? Why use something else?
