Vehicles are not cover

Missed the event. When I watched Godfather back in China long ago, it puzzled me a bit why Sonny didn't stay in the car for cover at the toll booth. The question didn't really get a real-world answer until I attended one of the NES car shoots.

P.S. I miss cekim and his posts. Intelligent and funny. Good guy in person. Geez, he had almost 30k posts here in 6 years. I'm not even 1/5 of that in 17.

There once were a couple of cops who worked night shift on a large federal installation. This installation happened to have a pretty realistic mock up of an Iraqi village for training soldiers who were deploying.

Well, these two night shift cops were bored and decided to do some ballistics experiments with an old car they found in this village and a couple hundred rounds of 9mm.

As it turns out, there isn’t much cover to be had at all even from a measly 9mm in the average car. The engine block of course, most of the heavy under carriage stuff, the rims and some of the window mechanisms in the door stopped rounds, but most would go from back to front like shooting paper.

Unfortunately, this car actually ran prior to the scientific experiment and some people were quite upset to find it turned to Swiss cheese on Monday morning. They had thought it was a dead car just used as part of the scenery.

Thankfully these guys had friends in high places and were able to quietly atone for their sins without any fanfare.

Anyway, lacking anything else, I’d get behind a car and hope for the best, but yeah, they don’t make good cover with the exception of the engine really.

The wheels and the engine block would be your best bet, but most center fire pistols and almost all center fire rifles will punch though the passenger compartment like it was cardboard.

Based on examining the leeward side of that poor Porsche after the shoot in 2011, use the cowling area for cover. And even that is not a guarantee.

ETA: As of a few years ago, "allegedly", the junkyard that accepted it still has it. They refused to crush it.
