That's not my understanding. If the same action violates both state and federal laws, you can be charged in state court and also in federal court.

While this is true (eg, Dual Sovereignty) it's important to note that the feds cannot prosecute things outside of their
jurisdiction, obviously, but that's almost worthless to even mention, given that they have about 9000 ways around that to trigger the "interstate commerce" stuff. It is interesting to note though the drastic differences between federal and state criminal charges. The fed stuff is a lot more fluffed up, and elaborate, and was obviously written to be supported by federal jurisdictional claims. For example when Djerkoff Tsarnaev got 30 counts of whatever against him, none of them were "murder of persons, X, Y, Z, etc in Q degree" it's all fluffed up stuff like "Using a weapon of mass destruction resulting in death". The feds have a lot of umbrella charges they can just throw people under.
