24 Hour Pandemic Prep List

Why am I getting the feeling that you are only here to brag about your yacht, and your house in Key West, and Hawaii, and MA, and your estate.??

Bully for you that you can just hop aboard your yacht and sail away. It has obviously given you a perspective on life that quite a few people on this forum don't share. Most of us have ONE house if we are lucky, and no yacht. When the SHTF there is nowhere to go but home - and when the govt. shows up at the front door - that is going to lead to some serious decision making.

Maybe the next time you take a trip on that yacht or you are sitting on your front porch down in Key West you should pick up some world history and read it - or better yet some American history from back in the day when this country was founded. So you will understand WHY the founding fathers felt as they did.

Better yet maybe you should ditch the yacht and Costa Rica and Key West and Hawaii and try trolling around in the world the rest of us live in.

You are beginning to remind me of one of those Hollywood liberals who makes asinine comments like: " I make millions of dollars a year - I think the government should raise taxes - I can afford it".

The elaboration in the Constitution of the natural right to own guns was not for "sport". If you think that an actual armed revolution is impossible then you are just simply not paying attention. If it is so impossible - then why does the government try so hard to ban the guns? Why does Homeland Security issue documents talking about people who even mention such things as domestic terrorists? Surely there can't be a threat when you are miles out at sea or ensconsed in some great little vacation spot like Key West?

I have a 52' live-aboard, ocean-going sailboat. I can go anywhere in the world in comfort. At this moment it's moored in Key West. Next month (May) I'll take it up the coast to Gloucester where it will sit until the leaves turn red then back down to the Caribbean after the hurricane season winds down. Now please stop worrying about this silly flu that a handfull of people have. All sorts of things kill all kinds of people. Please look at the probability numbers and get a grip.

John
You can be denied entry to a port or be quarantined on your vessel at any government's whim.

Cannot go ashore to resupply. They may not even let you sail again. They may call you a carrier and arrest you, quarantine you on shore, and impound your vessel.

Think that's crazy? Think again.

BTW, preparations for survival are not done because of the flu. They are done because at any moment, any number of things can disrupt the orderly flow of goods and services. Without them, most people WILL wither and die in short order.

Keep sailing, though.

You're correct about Gloucester being too blue collar, which is why I only go over there to have engine work done. "Your" people can be most usefull at times. I stay over on the north side in the mouth of the Annisquam River near the yacht club and Lobster Cove. Much better class of people. But you know that. Next year, we're having most of the Village turned into a gated community to keep the riff-raff out. Should you ever want to come over and shine some of my bright work, you'll have to swim from the bridge on 127. Make sure it's an outgoing tide. You know what it's like over there with all the whitewater kayaks and shit. I see you coming, I'll lower a rope, put you to good work.

All my best, John

Wow, I hope you're not like that in real life and it's all internet bravado talk.

You're certainly not going to have many friends if you are that way.

SA John, 688 posts, 52' sailboat, nice properties all over the world.

Yet too cheap to pay $19 to go green.

'Nuff said.

Wow SA John. I hope you realize that while lots of money is nice to have, it isn't going to save you when everything falls apart. Just try getting boat repairs when war or an EMP nuke or whatever cuts all the supply lines for products that you'd need to buy to keep yourself going. Or food. Money won't buy any food when there is none to be purchased.

Not that I am going to try very hard to convince you to better prepare for what may be coming, because truth be told I don't really care what happens to everyone, just the people that I can better relate to. I'm perfectly OK with the unprepared that aren't my friends and family dying off, just as long as they don't come to me to beg for anything after they had plenty of warning.

-1 With all your Alleged wealth, you should buy some class! [frown]
You are correct the NATIVE working guy is "MY" people.
However, I might be interested in a "Small" job this summer, what is the name of your boat?

SA John is a troll, but not a very entertaining one. Of course he lives on a 52' sailboat and has properties all over the world, that's why he has nothing better to do than troll NES. I know if I were independently wealthy and could be cruising right now, I sure wouldn't be sitting at a laptop posting here. My guess is that he can't AFFORD the $19 to join NES and that really makes me sad. Nothing is sadder than a broke troll.

If Derek will allow me too, I will pay the $19 membership fee for SA John. 100% serious. I feel bad for the guy. I don't know the policies of making someone else green, so if Derek says no, it's no. But if he says yes, I will pay it tonight.

What the heck is this green business? I don't read eveything on this forum. I have no idea what you are talking about. If it has to do with the ecology, count me out. I may be a flaming liberal, but I don't buy global warming.

John

Just now researched this green business. Green like money. Why the hell would anyone send money in for no benefit? This forum is free to anyone online. And if I had to give out personel info beyond what I already do in my posts, I'd have to have holes in my head. There are frightening people who post all the time on this thing. I don't trust anyone I don't know in the flesh. NOBODY. How the hell could you guys give up your security when you are always bitching about the government doing the same thing to you. (invading) Only a dingbat or a very needy person joins forums beyond the casual. Remember the Craig's List Killer. They are out there.

Now I'm sounding as paranoid as most of you. It's catching. Not like the swine flu, but catching.

John

P.S. Glostaman: You'll get the name of my boat about the time of Haley's Comet's next visit. But if you are over that way this summer, it's pretty hard to miss. I keep it right in front of the Moorish Mansion on the rocks off Wingearsheek Beach. If you see me on deck this summer, give me the finger and yell a**h***. I'll know it's you and be over in the dingy. Two bucks says I'll have you laughing before you leave. (and drunk)

John

Okay, I guess that means no Green scholarship for SA John, but since I was planning on spending it anyways, I will still send $19 and let Derek turn someone of his choosing green.

For non-greenies that might be reading this. There a ton of other benefits to going green (group buys, shoots, etc).

While lots of enjoy posting on different subjects (like the swine flu), this board is also a great place to buy and sell guns. Going green lets everyone know that you support NES.

No it's not there. That does look like a summer shot however. Find Leonard St. Follow it west to that large reddish private home on the edge of the water. That's the Moorish styled mansion I mentioned. I use a mooring they have and the boat is usually just out front of that big house. (yes, I know the owners of the big house - sorry but someone has to know them) At times when real heavy weather is coming I put it farther downstream near the 128 bridge.

About 5 years ago I did find my boat in a sat photo in Garrison Bight Key West. That's a large yacht basin on the north side of Key West. The google photo from that time has now been replaced by a picture I know was taken in the Florida summer because of the flowering trees I recognize. (all red flowers) My boat is up here most summers.

Guys - I thought this might have been a valuable resource and discussion thread given the current events, but it seems to have devolved into a bunch of nonsense - Add something of value or take it elsewhere - Thanks

Sorry! I did have a worth while comment too.
Regarding tampons: forget 'em! The "Keeper" (as mentioned in the article) is a far superior product. One lasts for a reported 10 years and produces zero waste or trash when compared to tampons w/ wrappers and applicators or pads with wrappers.
Also, they are made in the USA! They come in the original latex "keeper" or medical grade silicone "mooncup" versions. I have been using one for about a year and I love it! You can't find them in stores yet but you can find them new on eBay (I bought a spare on eBay) or online stores like gladrags.com. Have your ladies check them out! They are so worth it!

That's a pretty good list, but keep in mind that some of those things will disappear extremely fast. Masks, for example, are already gone and there isn't any real emergency yet. So, people should prep before they have a 24 hour warning if at all possible.

That said, there are lots of things out there that you can rush to get that the sheeple won't think of raiding right away. "Boring" stuff, like rice, oatmeal and beans should last longer in the stores.

Okay- I'll try to help re-right the thread since I assisted in the derailing--- re- stockpiling-

Ethical question, RE- Tamiflu. Assuming a horrible flu epidemic WERE to happen (looks like Swine is dying out and not going to be bad- fingers crossed), and one knew a doctor who would give one and one's family prescriptions for Tamiflu - do you think that's ethical? To store it up in preparation? Forgetting the shelf-life issue, just the issue of a state has a certain stockpile and if there were an epidemic, they'd run out, so people WITH the flu would likely die while you and your family who didn't have the flu were sitting on Tamiflu in your basement.

I'm of the mindset of taking care of one's own first, but I'm having trouble thinking of this one due to the limited resource aspect of the Tamiflu, it's not like stockpiling food or water, etc. because Tamiflu is a zero sum game. Thoughts??

JohnM, that's a good question. I know I would feel bad if I knew someone who died from the flu who may have lived if I gave them my Tamiflu (which I don't have access to, btw.)

Why wouldn't it be ethical? Tamilflu is not necessarily some limited resource. If you go and BUY it (remember, you would be spending your money on it to purchase it from somebody - meaning a FAIR exchange, not stealing it) - and then "hoard" it (a word used to put a negative spin on a perfectly sane behavior) - you are doing a sane and moral thing: preparing for a future event so that you do not put the burden of YOUR problems - on others.

This allows "others" to be free to concentrate on taking care of their problems. The manufacturers of Tamiflu are only going to produce so much of the drug. If an epidemic was to hit - and NOBODY was prepared - then the Tamiflu maker would suddenly be set upon to make massive amounts of the drug, which they probably don't have the capacity for. So by NOT buying Tamiflu ahead of time you are effectively putting the burden of YOUR survival onto them. If they are acting in a responsible manner - this would mean investing their money in unused production capacity just so that in the event of some hypothetical worst case scenario - they can be prepared. Essentially what has happened is that YOU, by not preparing - have transferred the burden of your survival onto somebody else. Do you think that is moral?

Here is another take on it:
http://www.wisebread.com/the-ethics-of-hoarding

Let me start by saying what it isn't. Stocking your pantry with goods that you're going to use isn't hoarding.

Hoarding is buying goods and storing them in the hope of selling them at a higher price.

Taken even further - if you decide to prepare ahead of time to combat some potential disaster in the future, you have taken personal initiative. You have risked your own money and time on a gamble that may or may not pay off. If nothing happens - the Tamilflu expires and gets dumped in the trash. Essentially - YOU lost. The Tamiflu maker made their money because they provided you with a service. So they are neutral in this. By preparing ahead of time you are exhibiting the type of behavior that supposedly made this country great: self reliance. If you do NOT prepare ahead of time and instead rely on being able to get Tamiflu at the time that the flu comes - you are putting the burden of your survival on others - in essence you are practicing the basics of socialism: spreading the burden around.

As a practical matter if everybody bought Tamiflu and kept it at home - the manufacturer could reach a stasis point and have the capacity to basically keep everybody constantly supplied with up to date doses. I am sure if you look at drugs like Tylenol - where people keep some at home and use it on a constant basis, it is a nice business - they just keep producing and pretty much EVERYBODY has some, so if a massive wave of headaches hit there is pretty much no crisis. Everybody just reaches into their medicine cabinet and pulls out a couple of pills.

If people did the same thing with Tamiflu that part of the crisis at least - would be a non-event. Everybody would just reach into their cabinets and take a pill. Doesn't that sound like the more "moral" way of doing things rather than creating a crisis that could have been avoided?
